An Institutional Repository is essentially a web application that is capable of capturing, preserving and disseminating the intellectual output of a University or research institution in digital formats. The advent of the Mobile Web has ushered in a new wave of mobile devices - with multi-touch facilities and thus there has been a shift from Web access to Mobile Web access. This has brought about the need to make web applications accessible via mobile devices. This study investigated the usability of the core functionalities of an Institutional Repository on various mobile devices. The work did not try to create a mobile version of the repository but rather test the existing web application on various mobile platforms. To achieve this, the core functionalities of the repository were modelled using Unified Modelling Language (UML). In addition, an Institutional Repository was built and deployed for Covenant University by leveraging on open source repository software – EPrints. Furthermore, the core functionalities of the Institutional Repository were tested on five different mobile devices.

A poorly designed and unusable system can lead to immense frustration to users, reduced productivity, undesirable profit lose and deterioration of one’s quality of life. To determine a successful interactive system, usability should be integrated in the design process to ensure greater shifts in efficiency and help to reduce work task errors. Incorporating usability in the development process can help to bridge the communication and procurement process for suppliers and customer organisations. Two usability evaluation methods, usability testing and heuristic evaluation were employed to evaluate on an online shopping website, namely Prezzybox.com. The main difference of these two usability evaluation methods is: usability testing involves real users in the test; whilst heuristic evaluation is a ‘quick and cheap’ technique to evaluate user interface with reference to a rule of thumbs by experts. Cost-benefit analysis was also carried out to justify which usability evaluation method was more cost-effective. The effectiveness of Common Industry Format (now as ISO/IEC 25062:2006) industry-reporting format for both usability evaluation methods is also discussed.

For that, numerous terminological systems have been developed, providing structure and leading to interoperability. Interface terminologies are regarded the most important and are designed to translate clinicians’ own natural terms into a more structured representation of concepts needed by the applications. An interface terminology, i.e. DICE (Diagnoses for Intensive Care Evaluation), was developed for the Intensive Care to uniform and standardize diagnostic information. We evaluated the usability of this new interface terminology by testing the performance and learn-ability. Literature searches were done to gain information and the results were used to design the usability evaluation study of DICE. A case study was performed by using the Think Aloud method, SUS questionnaire and measuring the Time on Task. The usability evaluation of DICE has provided us with useful information. Web site usability is an essential element in a web site; nonetheless, one can find an abundance of web pages with poor usability. This discrepancy is the result of limitations that are currently preventing web developers in the commercial sector from producing usable web sites. This work proposes a framework whose objective is to alleviate this problem by automating certain aspects of the usability evaluation process. Mainstreaming comes as a result of automation, therefore enabling non-expert in the field of usability to conduct the evaluation. This results in a reduction of the costs associated with such an evaluation, whilst overcoming other limitations such as the need to engage usability experts and inconsistent evaluations. Additionally, the framework allows the flexibility of adding, modifying or deleting guidelines without altering the code that references them. A comparison of the evaluation results carried out using the framework against published evaluations of web sites carried out by web site usability experts reveals very encouraging results.

The main subject of this study is the vendor’s style in user interface design of contemporary mobile phones. It is investigated both from designers’ points of view and users’ points of view. Vendor’s style is concerned in the whole process of user interface design as consistency, building the vendor’s identity. UI designers have to understand the difference in the competitions’ style in order to create a well-designed style with high usability. From the user’s point of view, the vendor’s style in user interface has a significant role in the initial usability when replacing a mobile phone. Two research questions that have arisen from these concerns about the vendor’s style and usability: 1.What is the vendor’s style of the user interface in a mobile phone?; 2.How does a vendor’s style in the user interface affect initial usability of mobile phones? In addition to usability, cultural influences in the vendor’s style are approached. Three authoritative manufacturers are selected based on different cultural backgrounds. The third research question about relationship between a vendor’s culture and style in UI is as follows:Is there a cultural influence in the vendor’s style?

This book contributes with a study about developing e-government systems that process natural language to create structured semantic information which is automatically manipulated to meet citizens’ needs and expectations. In order to put this to test, this work was developed in three major phases: (1) design of a conceptual model, in line with the vision of e-government, integrating the creation of structured information and making it available to various actors; (2) selection of state-of-the-art software tools and definition of a prototype instantiating the key modules of the conceptual model, including access based on natural language; (3) assessment of the usability and acceptability of querying information as made possible by the prototype - and in consequence of the conceptual model - by users in a realistic scenario, that includes comparison with forms of access available today in production systems. The evaluation results show that the proposed model was perceived as more effective and useful than the alternatives.

An evaluation was done for the potential of introducing REDD+ in the Miombo woodlands. Three countries -- Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe -- all contain the woodland and were selected for the evaluation. Lessons from the evaluation will help for scaling-up within all 11 countries covered by the biome. Findings pointed out that forest stocks were decreasing for all the countries for at least the past 10 years. Country level institutions responsible for forest conservation indicated that economic, political and social contexts of the countries largely influenced the level of institutional coherence in management of forests. The evaluation pointed out the need for enhanced equitable governance and security of property rights as prerequisite for REDD to be effective. Due to a general weakness in institutional frameworks and forestry governance and a multilayering of institutions, a clash of roles, corruption, and lack of transparency and disregard of conservation are bound to increase. Recommendations are for a development and strengthening of countries’ institutions. The strengthened and collective action of institutions can thus increase and strengthen property rights over forests.

Learn What Usability Really Is, Why to Strive for It, and How to Achieve It «Highly useable» software is easy to use. It does what you expect it to. And it does it well. It's not easy to build but as this book demonstrates, it's well worth the effort. Highly useable software is highly successful software—and everyone wins. Inside, an accomplished programmer who has made usability his business systematically explores the world of programming, showing you how every aspect of the work is implicated in the usability of the final product. This is not just an «issues» book, however, but systematic, real-world instructions for developing applications that are better in every way. As you'll learn, there's no such thing as «intuitive» software. Instead, there are just the factors that make it highly useable: simplicity, consistency, the recognition of accepted conventions, and the foregrounding of the user's perspective. With these principles under your belt, you'll quickly discover dozens of ways to make your applications more useable: Making windows and dialog boxes easy to comprehend and use Designing software that is time- and resource-efficient Making your software easy to navigate Reducing the complexity of reports and other presentations of data Understanding how the wrong programming decisions can limit usability Ensuring smooth starts and stops Capitalizing on the usability advantages of object-oriented programming Understanding how usability affects your product's financial success Using the testing process to improve usability Promoting usability in training, installation, and online help Making management decisions that will benefit software usability Some chapters are written primarily for programmers, one primarily for managers. Most are for everyone, and all are filled with illuminating, usually amusing examples drawn from both inside and outside the technical world. A helpful appendix provides information on standards, usability groups, and sources for more information.

However, e-Government websites have not adequately addressed user-centric designs for social inclusion of citizens and lack a standardized approach to evaluate and compare the usability of user account interfaces to accommodate a diverse user population. This study proposed extending a goal driven usability evaluation methodology called GOMS with UML Use Cases by establishing common security goals called Security Cases. Security Cases can be used to standardize and objectively quantify and compare the task times and error count in completing similar goals on different websites. This study assessed if incorporating Security Cases with GOMS is a more effective way to quantify and compare different security interfaces when performing a usability study to determine more effective interface designs to accommodate a diverse population and encourage improvements in making user account interfaces more accessible to e-Citizens.

Evaluation is basically a stock-taking process. It is purposeful, applied social evaluation. Its most important role is that of contributing to decisions about the program while it''s in process or to decisions about adopting, continuation, termination or changing a program. Evaluation thus gives direction and impetus to program efforts. It gives evidence and support to actions taken and suggests changes to be made if program goals must be appreciably achieved. Evaluation has another generic goal of influencing policy formulation through the provision of empirically driven feedback. Evaluation should be inbuilt in any program rather than an end to be achieved later in the process. It is in this view that this book has looked at the nature of program evaluation, levels of evaluation, evaluation designs, evaluation models and strategic application of evaluation models in educational programs in Kenya.

In the new economy SMEs face new challenges in their B2C transactions, such as the use of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Electronic commerce may represent a com-petitive advantage to make enterprises more visible to consumers. The main barrier to the development of successful e-commerce business is represented by websites not meeting basic accessibility and usability features. To tackle this issue, heuristic evaluation and the gap analysis approach has been adopted. Website usability issues have been measured by a panel of consumers assessing a selected website each. Potential e-consumers simulated an online purchase, thereby allowing them to acquire insights on the importance and prospective satisfaction on each of the usability issues taken into considera-tion. The statistically significant usability issues mainly involve efficiency of navigations (useful naviga-tion tools or sequence of navigation), accuracy in content and supplied information. Additional in-formation underlining the link between wine production and its territory enhances consumers’ iden-tification. Consumers are more keen to purchase by easy structure of websites than design and style.

Of the major models, the Web of System Performance (WOSP) model provides the most comprehensive basis for information system evaluation. The research question was how well the eight WOSP performance criteria: functionality; usability; flexibility; reliability; security; extendibility; connectivity; and privacy, applied in evaluating information systems. For this, it was important to show that these concepts can be established and identified clearly and with a valid meaning that users would consider important; that users prefer the eight WOSP criteria to the current dominant instrument for evaluating software; and that they rate at least three of the WOSP criteria as being important for evaluation. For this, conjoint analysis was used. A browser was selected as the experimental software for this research. The results showed that users found the WOSP model’s concepts to be clear, valid and important for the evaluation of browsers. They also preferred using this model for the evaluation of browsers. Finally, while users attached different levels of importance to the various performance criteria for the selection of browsers, six of the criteria were important to a significant degree.

A lack of access to quality health care is one of the greatest barriers to realization of the right to education for all youth in South Africa. Poor health, specifically adolescents’ access to appropriate sexual and reproductive health services, negatively influences the access to education, the retention of learners in school as well as their educational success. This study supplied resources to provide health and career counselling to learners at schools or near schools. The provision of such services through schools enables accessibility and the uptake of services. The results of this study have showed that the combination of reproductive health and career services is effective in providing adolescents with unique opportunities to access information, services and skills in order to make informed and supported decisions about their health and future plans. Interventions such as this one should be offered on a large scale, adapting the design and implementation based on the context of the area and needs of the learners. These results may inform future large-scale implementation efforts in the future.

Currently, cellular networks are overloaded with mobile data traffic due to the rapid growth of mobile broadband subscriptions. The combination of Smartphones such as iPhones, netbooks and 3G/4G mobile networks are rapidly growing in very large numbers and as a result, this has created an exceptional demand for ubiquitous connectivity and quality of rich digital content and applications. To meet the requirements of future data-rich applications and terminals with improved multimedia, future wireless networks are expected to combine multiple access technologies and as a result mobile broadband operators are including WLANs like WiFi as an alternative access network technology. This enables solutions to offload traffic from the primary access technology to the WiFi access when applicable so as to provide extra capacity and improve overall performance. By offloading, it means that using alternative network technologies for delivering data originally targeted for e.g. cellular networks when it becomes saturated or when it exceeds its capability. In this work novel offloading algorithms are proposed and implemented, that decides when to move flow(s) between LTE and WiFi access networks.

It is not easy to make a decision between aesthetics and usability aspects: which one needs to be given more consideration? Usability and aesthetics, two primary factors in designing e-commerce websites, have been a subject of debate between usability specialists and graphic designers. The first group believe that usability is the key for a successful e-commerce website while graphic designers consider that aesthetic design of the website is the main factor that affects customer behaviour in purchasing online. However, in setting priority in website designing, designers should reflect on customers’ perception towards the website. In this book one travel website is selected as a case study to evaluate with the aim of providing designer with useful information to enhance website designing, specifically travel websites.

The quality of Nigerian legal education is fast deteriorating and in addition, the current structure of monitoring the training of lawyers is grossly ineffective. This book discusses steps that can be taken in reforming the current structure of Nigerian legal education to revert this trend. The book proposes a system of internal institutional assessment by the law faculties in Nigeria. Financial, social - cultural constraints and political economy interference are obstacles to reforming Nigerian legal education, but institutional assessment can mitigate these obstacles. Using Mariana Prado’s concept of institutional bypass as a solution to overcoming these obstacles and also as a means of advancing reforms in the training of lawyers in Nigerian, this book proposes the adoption of institutional assessment as a strategy to create an avenue for stimulating reforms and promoting quality in Nigerian legal education.

Telephony applications in the area of education are developed mainly for the visually impaired to address the limitations of user interface of a mobile learner. However, with the proliferation of learning resources on the web, finding suitable content has become a rigorous task for voice-based online learners to achieve better performance. The problem of Finding Content Suitability (FCS) with voice e-Learning applications is more complex when the sight impaired learner is involved. Existing voice-based e-Education applications lack the attributes of adaptive and reusable learning objects to be able to address the FCS problem. This book, therefore, provides a framework for intelligent Voice-based e-Education Systems and an implementation of a system based on the framework with dual user interfaces – voice and web. The results of the usability evaluation shows that the application will not only complement existing mobile and web-based learning systems but will be of immense benefit to users, based on the system’s capacity for taking autonomous decisions that are capable of adapting to the needs of both visually impaired and non-visually impaired learners

Revision with unchanged content. Due to continuous advances in mobile hardware, devices such as smartphones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) are becoming a truly mobile alternative to bulky and heavy notebooks, allowing the users to access and search remote data while on the road. Application fields that benefit from increased staff mobility are business consultants, mechanical engineers, and doctors in hospitals, for instance. However, a drawback that impedes this development is that the form factor of mobile devices requires a small- sized screen. Hence, given a large data set, only a fraction of it can be displayed. To identify important data the users typically have to linearly navigate the off-screen space via scrolling. For large information spaces, this is tedious, error- prone, and particularly slow. In contrast, the concept of zoomable user interfaces (ZUIs) has been found to improve the user performance for many retrieval and exploration scenarios. While ZUIs have been investigated mainly in desktop environments, this work analyzes the usability potentials of zooming and panning in a mobile context given the constraints of a small screen and pen-input.
