Electronic Medical Records should capture structured clinical information to support programs used at the point of clinical care. For that, numerous terminological systems have been developed, providing structure and leading to interoperability. Interface terminologies are regarded the most important and are designed to translate clinicians’ own natural terms into a more structured representation of concepts needed by the applications. An interface terminology, i.e. DICE (Diagnoses for Intensive Care Evaluation), was developed for the Intensive Care to uniform and standardize diagnostic information. We evaluated the usability of this new interface terminology by testing the performance and learn-ability. Literature searches were done to gain information and the results were used to design the usability evaluation study of DICE. A case study was performed by using the Think Aloud method, SUS questionnaire and measuring the Time on Task. The usability evaluation of DICE has provided us with useful information. The research and results are useful for other researchers intending to test the usability of interface terminologies.

A poorly designed and unusable system can lead to immense frustration to users, reduced productivity, undesirable profit lose and deterioration of one’s quality of life. To determine a successful interactive system, usability should be integrated in the design process to ensure greater shifts in efficiency and help to reduce work task errors. Incorporating usability in the development process can help to bridge the communication and procurement process for suppliers and customer organisations. Two usability evaluation methods, usability testing and heuristic evaluation were employed to evaluate on an online shopping website, namely Prezzybox.com. The main difference of these two usability evaluation methods is: usability testing involves real users in the test; whilst heuristic evaluation is a ‘quick and cheap’ technique to evaluate user interface with reference to a rule of thumbs by experts. Cost-benefit analysis was also carried out to justify which usability evaluation method was more cost-effective. The effectiveness of Common Industry Format (now as ISO/IEC 25062:2006) industry-reporting format for both usability evaluation methods is also discussed.

A lack of access to quality health care is one of the greatest barriers to realization of the right to education for all youth in South Africa. Poor health, specifically adolescents’ access to appropriate sexual and reproductive health services, negatively influences the access to education, the retention of learners in school as well as their educational success. This study supplied resources to provide health and career counselling to learners at schools or near schools. The provision of such services through schools enables accessibility and the uptake of services. The results of this study have showed that the combination of reproductive health and career services is effective in providing adolescents with unique opportunities to access information, services and skills in order to make informed and supported decisions about their health and future plans. Interventions such as this one should be offered on a large scale, adapting the design and implementation based on the context of the area and needs of the learners. These results may inform future large-scale implementation efforts in the future.

The main subject of this study is the vendor’s style in user interface design of contemporary mobile phones. It is investigated both from designers’ points of view and users’ points of view. Vendor’s style is concerned in the whole process of user interface design as consistency, building the vendor’s identity. UI designers have to understand the difference in the competitions’ style in order to create a well-designed style with high usability. From the user’s point of view, the vendor’s style in user interface has a significant role in the initial usability when replacing a mobile phone. Two research questions that have arisen from these concerns about the vendor’s style and usability: 1.What is the vendor’s style of the user interface in a mobile phone?; 2.How does a vendor’s style in the user interface affect initial usability of mobile phones? In addition to usability, cultural influences in the vendor’s style are approached. Three authoritative manufacturers are selected based on different cultural backgrounds. The third research question about relationship between a vendor’s culture and style in UI is as follows:Is there a cultural influence in the vendor’s style?

I investigate effect of banking market power, assumed to increase in market concentration, on firms'' financing constraints in a number of countries in 1991–2002. I find evidence for financing constraints indicated by sensitivity of firms'' investment to availability of internal finance. Results show that banking concentration reduces firms'' constraints. Small firms are constrained & become less so in more concentrated markets. There is no evidence for constraints for large firms or for effect of concentration on sensitivity of their investment to availability of internal funds. I find that legal system efficiency, financial development & level of restrictiveness of regulatory environment can each indirectly influence investment through its impact on banking concentration. None of these factors directly affects investment. I find evidence for differential effect of concentration on firms'' constraints in countries with different levels of institutional development. Results show that beneficial effect of banking market power on access to credit may be limited for certain types of borrowers & delivered under certain policy conditions.

Web site usability is an essential element in a web site; nonetheless, one can find an abundance of web pages with poor usability. This discrepancy is the result of limitations that are currently preventing web developers in the commercial sector from producing usable web sites. This work proposes a framework whose objective is to alleviate this problem by automating certain aspects of the usability evaluation process. Mainstreaming comes as a result of automation, therefore enabling non-expert in the field of usability to conduct the evaluation. This results in a reduction of the costs associated with such an evaluation, whilst overcoming other limitations such as the need to engage usability experts and inconsistent evaluations. Additionally, the framework allows the flexibility of adding, modifying or deleting guidelines without altering the code that references them. A comparison of the evaluation results carried out using the framework against published evaluations of web sites carried out by web site usability experts reveals very encouraging results.

An evaluation was done for the potential of introducing REDD+ in the Miombo woodlands. Three countries -- Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe -- all contain the woodland and were selected for the evaluation. Lessons from the evaluation will help for scaling-up within all 11 countries covered by the biome. Findings pointed out that forest stocks were decreasing for all the countries for at least the past 10 years. Country level institutions responsible for forest conservation indicated that economic, political and social contexts of the countries largely influenced the level of institutional coherence in management of forests. The evaluation pointed out the need for enhanced equitable governance and security of property rights as prerequisite for REDD to be effective. Due to a general weakness in institutional frameworks and forestry governance and a multilayering of institutions, a clash of roles, corruption, and lack of transparency and disregard of conservation are bound to increase. Recommendations are for a development and strengthening of countries’ institutions. The strengthened and collective action of institutions can thus increase and strengthen property rights over forests.

This book contributes with a study about developing e-government systems that process natural language to create structured semantic information which is automatically manipulated to meet citizens’ needs and expectations. In order to put this to test, this work was developed in three major phases: (1) design of a conceptual model, in line with the vision of e-government, integrating the creation of structured information and making it available to various actors; (2) selection of state-of-the-art software tools and definition of a prototype instantiating the key modules of the conceptual model, including access based on natural language; (3) assessment of the usability and acceptability of querying information as made possible by the prototype - and in consequence of the conceptual model - by users in a realistic scenario, that includes comparison with forms of access available today in production systems. The evaluation results show that the proposed model was perceived as more effective and useful than the alternatives.

The Quality of Service (QoS) offered to the mobile users improves from one system to another one. The systems of third generation (3G), like UMTS, offer a better quality of service compared to that offered by those of second generation (2G), like the GSM. For example, the systems of 3.5G (HSDPA) improve the throughput of the network of 3G in the downlink direction according to the requirements of the new services. Moreover, the networks of fourth generation (4G), like WiMax (IEEE802.16e), as for them, make it possible to widen the cover of the base station while offering a very important throughput in which supports the next generation applications or services already offered by the Internet in the downlink and uplink directions. This new evolution still improves accessibility with the services of the Internet. The migration of the services of the Internet towards the mobile networks, constitutes a major stake of research in telecommunications.

However, a portal that is not easy to use is more likely to drive users away than attract them. If such a portal is the gate to some commercial products, it can become a stumbling block to the success of the business it is meant to promote. This book stresses the need to design and implement effective portal systems that recognize the central role of usability. The book presents a practical model for conducting evaluation of portal systems using a case study approach. Two on-line portal systems have been evaluated and the results are clearly explained in a separate chapter. This approach also highlights important insights that are recognizable from a typical review and explains how such feed back can contribute to effective post implementation review. In this book readers can find information that is useful to them whether they are designers or business owners. Using information in this book, business owners can actively participate in the evaluation of their portals in order to ensure that the portal does not produce undesirable effects due to pitfalls of poor design.

The objective of rural credit is to provide assistance to the target groups. The present study has been made to examine and evaluate the working of institutional rural credit agencies in Assam, INDIA especially to Rangia sub-division. This study is an attempt to bring into focus the role & contributions of three financial institutions - Commercial Banks, RRBs & Assam Co-operative Apex Bank Ltd. in mobilizing resources & providing credit facilities for raising the level of income & employment of the people, particularly to the rural poor. The field survey covered 300 beneficiaries. The comparison of banks shows that the commercial bank groups were better provider of credit than the RRBs & Co-operative Bank. This is due to low capital base of co-operative & RRBs. Evaluation of rural credit delivery system from time to time & monitoring them should be done effectively. A continuous personnel involvement of the credit institution & other development agencies must win the confidence of local people. This will go a long way in accelerating the process of acceptability of new ideas, resulting in a successful implementation of various developmental schemes in totality in the rural areas.

E-Government websites have an overwhelming responsibility to ensure they are designed to accommodate the very citizens they serve in addition to providing equal and open access to all audiences given their diverse demographic demands. However, e-Government websites have not adequately addressed user-centric designs for social inclusion of citizens and lack a standardized approach to evaluate and compare the usability of user account interfaces to accommodate a diverse user population. This study proposed extending a goal driven usability evaluation methodology called GOMS with UML Use Cases by establishing common security goals called Security Cases. Security Cases can be used to standardize and objectively quantify and compare the task times and error count in completing similar goals on different websites. This study assessed if incorporating Security Cases with GOMS is a more effective way to quantify and compare different security interfaces when performing a usability study to determine more effective interface designs to accommodate a diverse population and encourage improvements in making user account interfaces more accessible to e-Citizens.

Gaudencia Ndeda shows how in 2005 the Government of Kenya launched the Sessional Paper No.1 on Policy Framework for Education, Training and Research which provided for the upgrading of the national polytechnics to offer degree programs in their areas of expertise without dropping their traditional tertiary programs. It therefore became necessary to upgrade the existing Diploma in Technology curricula offered in these institutions in order to make them compatible with global requirements of Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) both at diploma and at degree levels. The Kenya Polytechnic University College established a program to improve and upgrade the existing Diploma in Technology syllabi and to develop new degree syllabi to address the need to expand access to higher education, bridge the gap between science, technology, innovation and provide a way for diploma students to access higher education in their area of specialization. The book will help the lecturers and principals in high institutions for decision making in similar undertakings.

Human Computer Interaction (HCI) emerged as a field of research with the purpose of studying the interaction between user and computer technology. In the challenging world every system is build to satisfy users’ needs by some specific operation in the system but the more important challenge is to create a usable or user-friendly system. Usability is acted with end-user by an interaction between user and the system. This interaction is maintained by user interface. But to the software engineer, usability is just one of the many aspects that must be taken into account in the development process and most of the case if it is an explicit interest then is considered if time permits. Moreover, there is a trend to consider usability the responsibility of somebody else. Typically, usability is still considered as a test activity rather than a product design activity. In this book, we have focused on the challenges to implement usability design for the software companies and impacts on software development process.

Usability can be thought of as a measure or degree to which a system satisfies the needs of the human. Usability is a quality inherent to any given system, which assists in determining the efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction levels of those involved in the interaction. Everyday we are bombarded with interactions and experiences that shape our thoughts, values, and judgments as well as test our limits of interaction with technology. These interactions have progressed at such an intense pace that humans have become practically slaves to technological innovation. Humans are forced to conform with needs of technology, rather then technology conforming to human needs. This fact must be rectified and becomes the primary focus of this thesis.

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) encompass mobile devices such as laptops, tablets, handhelds, phones, that use wireless transmission technologies for access of information from anywhere any time. These networks can be formed by a group of ad hoc nodes irrespective of time and location, without any infrastructure and having no central control. Provisioning of on-demand Quality of Service (QoS) to the mobile users is a major challenge in this network. This book discusses ad hoc networks starting from the basic concepts to its issues, QoS parameters, their evaluation methods, QoS provisioning mechanisms, and challenges with an emphasis to channel allocation, routing, and multicasting. Performance analysis of well known ad hoc routing protocols such as DSDV, DSR and AODV with varying network conditions provides an idea of selecting suitable routing protocol for better QoS to the Mobile Hosts (MH) in MANETs. Application of VGA for channel allocation and MOO for QoS multicasting are the major contributed models in this book. This book will be helpful for postgraduate students as well as for research scholars, especially using ns-2 simulator for modelling and testing protocols in MANETs.

In response to the food security problem in Ethiopia, efforts are done much on boosting agricultural production and especially cereals are given due attention. A new "Millennium" crop known as rice is among the crops grown in some parts of Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to examine factors affecting adoption in the study area. The study was conducted in Fogera district, South Gondar zone, ANRS. Three Peasant Associations among the 15 PAs of upland growers of the district were selected purposively and a total of adopters and non-adopters of 120 selected households were interviewed to generate primary data. Descriptive statistics were used for analyzing quantitative data. Preference ranking technique and econometric model (binary logit) was employed. The result showed that any effort in promoting improved upland rice variety, however, should consider the social, economic, institutional and psychological characteristics for better adoption of the technology. Therefore, attempts to promote transformation in agriculture through improved upland rice variety could be successful if the evaluation criteria and determinants are taken into consideration.

Ecuador is prone to natural hazards due to its geographic location and by man-made events. Effective disaster risks management requires timely and reliable access to a wide range of geo-spatial data by actors.Ecuador has national institutions that manage geo-spatial data. Risk management is a component that several institutions are paying attention for its importance in the development. In the fall of 2002, several institutions of the State agreed to promote the creation of Geo-Informatics National Board-CONAGE, with the goal to promote the orderly production of geo-spatial data, to formulate national politics, to promote the use and access of this information. The study explores whether the initiative of creating a NSDI could be of help for the actors that play an active role on disaster risk management. It concludes that the initiative of developing a NSDI may indeed be helpful to disaster risk management because most actors involved address multi-hazards and have many data in common; specifically basic data. The study recommends that the main proponent of the current NSDI initiative will regularly assess how far the end-users of geo-spatial data are satisfied in their requirements.

E-commerce, today, is a part of human communication and social system, though technical aspects of E-commerce systems are important, there are also social variables which should come to consideration, so any E-commerce system can be viewed from two main view points; Technical and Human/Social. Pure technical solutions can not lead to a successful E-commerce. In order to maximize revenue from online trade, companies must have a usable E-commerce systems and websites, which give customers a real and convenient shopping experience and good customer service. If an E-commerce system supports all the factors mentioned above, it can satisfy customers and persuade them to buy online again. It is not easy to create and maintain a system and website which satisfy customers and makes them loyal, but in the case of fulfilling this goal, satisfied users may spend longer time at website, may revisit website later and also may recommend the website to others. The main issue is how to create such a systems and websites which considered being useable. The objective of research is to evaluate variables, both technical and human/social, affecting usability of systems from customers’ point of view.

The empirical research described in this book comprised three experimental phases. In the first phase, an initial experiment was carried out to explore and compare the usability and learning performance of facially animated expressive avatars with earcons and speech, and text with graphics metaphors. The second experimental phase involved an experiment conducted to investigate users’ perception of avatar’s facial expressions and body gestures when presented in both the absence and presence of interactive e-learning context. In addition, the experiment aimed at evaluating the role that an avatar could play as virtual lecturer in e-learning interfaces by comparing the usability and learning performance of three different modes of interaction. The third phase experimentally examined a novel approach for the use of earcons and auditory icons in e-learning interfaces to support an animated facially expressive avatar with body gestures during the presentation of the learning material. The obtained results demonstrated the usefulness of the tested metaphors to enhance e-learning usability and to enable users to attain better learning performance.

The establishment of Regional Rural Banks in India represents an innovation in Indian banking system. The innovation is not only with respect to institutional form but also with respect to objectives, functions, area of operation and its clientele. For this reason this new type of bank can be regarded as a specialized institution which is distinct from commercial banks as well as co-operative credit institutions. After the passing of Regional Rural Bank Act, 1976 several RRBs were established in different regions of India. One such new type of bank was also established for the districts of Bankura, Purulia and Midnapore in West Bengal on April 9,1976 in order to meet the credit needs of the rural poor and also to mobilize deposits in the rural sector of these districts. This bank is the Mallabhum Gramin Bank. The present book is the result of my research work which evaluated the working of Mallabhum Gramin Bank during the last ten years of its service from the year 1995-96.

Multimedia communication over wireless networks is the technology of the future. The requirement of multimedia transmission is a perfect multiple access technique. Voice is the major traffic carried by today's cellular networks. Performance studies show that by applying reservation policies with the Packet Reservation Multiple Access (PRMA) and slotted CDMA, we can easy integrate different traffic types in mobile communication network. In this work, we studies PRMA and slotted CDMA protocols. An analytical model and computation is presented in order to determine the parameters that influence its efficiency. Two numerical methods are proposed for the evaluation of Packet Reservation Multiple Access (PRMA) protocol based voice/data integration system. The first model uses the equilibrium point analysis (EPA), which is used to calculate the voice packet dropping probability, average data delay (the voice terminal will drop a long delayed packet while the data terminal just keeps it in the buffer) and system throughput. The second uses the Markov analysis adopted to evaluate the same three performance measures.
