This study, based on the author's doctoral dissertation at UCLA, examines Yugoslav economic policy from 1918 to 1929, how it was made, and how it was affected by political developments of the time. It studies the activities of Yugoslavia's regional political and business elites, political groups, and corporations, their reactions to Yugoslav economic policy and their efforts to influence it. The study contains a detailed analysis of party politics and the manner in which the political process affected economic policy. The study uncovers and explains relationships between state, elite, class, national-confessional groups, and territorial regions in the determination of social and economic policy in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, later renamed Yugoslavia, and the relationship between these groups and the Yugoslav state.

In particular, he shows how decisions made at critical junctures in East Germany's history led to a pattern of economic decline and worker dissatisfaction that contributed to eventual political collapse.

Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich BWL - Wirtschaftspolitik, Freie Universität Berlin (Otto Suhr Institut - Politikwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Politikwissenschaft, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: German trade unions' influence in industrial relations at the national level is curbed by the side effects of European integration. Supranationalization implies the transfer of regulatory power from the national to the supranational level. In the various policy areas, integration and supranationalization proceed at different speeds with regard to scope and level. This also applies to the neighboring policy areas of economic and labor policy. However, due to the overlap of these two policy areas, the asymmetrical integration of economic policy vis-a-vis labor policy leads to shifts in the German collective bargaining system, thus circumscribing the scope of German trade unions' action. More specifically, sectoral asymmetry leads to asymmetric political localization of the policy areas: Regulations in the economy are mainly taken at the EU level, whereas labor and social affairs remain national competences. Furthermore, the insertion of a supra-national layer is accompanied by a policy-theoretical change of the highest governmental and judicial authority from a hitherto (social-democratic) market-correcting consensus to a now market-making approach. This shift causes respective shifts at the national level as well. Additionally, the European Court of Justice possesses ...

A passionate, detailed, quantified argument for state-level tax reform An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of States explains why eliminating or lowering tax burdens at the state level leads to economic growth and wealth creation. A passionate argument for tax reform, the book shows that even states with small populations can benefit enormously with the right policies. The authors’ detailed exposition evaluates the impact state and local government policies have on a state’s relative performance and economic growth overall, backed up with economic data and analysis. Facts don’t lie. But they do point clearly to the failure of so-called progressive tax schemes designed more to curry favor with selected constituencies than to create an economic system that leads to individual wealth as the reward for hard work and entrepreneurial risk taking. An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of States is a detailed and critical look at income taxation across the nation, and drills down into an analysis of the economic growth or malaise that results from tax policy. Arguing eloquently that a state cannot tax itself into prosperity, just as the impoverished cannot spend themselves into wealth, the authors point out what many inherently know but often fear to say out loud. The book provides detailed quantitative analysis, and discusses the policy variables that can have enormous effects on the financial well-being of states and individual residents, such as: Personal and corporate income tax rates Total tax burden as a percentage of personal income Estate and inheritance taxes Right-to-work laws An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of States shows everyone how to evaluate state-level fiscal and economic policies to become more competitive.

Although the EU is growing ever closer as a single economic entity, the difference in wealth and economic power among its member nations - from Germany and France to Romania and Bulgaria - is still enormous. This is despite the European Union's continuous efforts to reduce welfare differences between its member states since its foundation in 1958: The long-term objective of the EU is a convergence of income and GDP per capita levels within the entire Union. This policy is known as European cohesion policy, which nowadays accounts for more than one third of the EU's total budget. The vast financial importance of the cohesion policy naturally begs two questions: Are structural funds effective in promoting economic growth? And if so, do they promote income and welfare convergence within the EU? Yet most studies so far have merely yielded fragmented results, as they only focus on single EU member states, or consist of data for short time periods. In contrast, this study captures long-term effects of structural funds in the recent past and delivers accurate and meaningful empirical results. It focuses on data for the European Regional Development Fund since this is the most important item of cohesion policy which financially supports projects that aim to foster convergence directly. In this book:- European cohesion policy; - structural funds; - European Regional Development Fund; - economic convergence; - Solow-Model; - growth theory

Undoubtedly, what happens to the economy affects the lives of the citizens of a country, and often the lives of people in other countries around the globe. In addition to natural disasters two things affect the economy more than anything else: monetary and fiscal policies. Fiscal policy and monetary policy represent forms of government intervention to influence market performance. Fiscal policy relates to government spending and revenue collection; monetary policy relates to the supply of money, which is controlled by factors such as reserve requirements and interest rates. If there were a universally accepted set of rules that prescribe appropriate actions to bring and sustain prosperity to the economy the study of economics would have been a positive science, as opposed to a collection of normative beliefs. The study of these policies is normative in nature because fiscal and monetary policies do not necessarily impact everyone equally or in the same way. In other words not everybody loses or gains equally as the result of fiscal and monetary policies. Nevertheless, there are non-normative economic theories that explain the expected outcome of specific fiscal or monetary policies. The economists that advocate for fiscal or monetary policies generally agree on the economic consequences produced by each policy when implemented. What differentiates the economists is the degree to which they believe in the effectiveness of the policy, their ability to know the extent of the need...

This book provides consecutively guidance to utilize new Taylor rule in monetary policy making. The multi quadrant model eases to configure an interrelationship among economic factors. This book reveals hypotheses of how to recover weakened business cycle, how to trace instability effect due to an excess money supply, and how far excess money supply will influence a business cycle. The analysis helps to recommend strategic action to stabilize economic disturbances in short and long term, and should be especially useful to professionals in banking and finance fields, or anyone else who may be considering utilizing economic indicators in decision making efforts.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 1,3, University of Southampton, language: English, abstract: Following years of incredible economic development in China, the country today is facing severe, environmental problems. This has been widely acknowledged by Chinese leaders as well as by international scholars. This work presents a detailed analysis of the foreign environmental policy of the People's Republic of China (PRC) for the period from 1972 to the present day. In recent decades, the country's behaviour changed from having an initial policy of refusal to having a more cooperative position within international negotiations, combined with voluntary agreements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While the central government undertook its first steps towards a green, foreign environmental policy, scholars mainly analysed this changing behaviour from a political or economic standpoint. This work, however, no longer uses 'traditional' viewpoints to explain the changing behaviour, but focuses on social structures that act as drivers for China's cooperative behaviour within global environmental governance structures. Therefore, three hypotheses are developed from a constructivist framework. According to these hypotheses, China's foreign environmental policy is driven by three incentives: its new identity as a 'green' developing country; the emergence and cascade of th...

The principal purpose of this thesis is to evaluate India's motives for its strong interactions with Southeast Asia. The most common approach among academics to explain India's Look East Policy follows a liberal understanding of International Relations. Liberals argue that both, India and the Southeast Asian countries want to exploit complementarities in their economic and social structures: This thesis however, follows a neorealist understanding of International Relations by arguing that the Look East Policy is primarily a strategy of the Indian government to counterbalance the growing Chinese influence in Southeast Asia: Due to the geographic closeness of the Asia Pacific region to the Indian subcontinent, China's presence there is particularly worrisome for India. The United States strongly support China's economic development by granting it permanent Normal Trade Relations, for example, and investing directly in China's manufacturing sector. Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,2, University of Applied Sciences Saarbrücken (Faculty of Business and Economics), language: English, abstract: The Federal Reserve System and the European Central Bank were both forced to implement unconventional monetary policy measures as a response to the severe impact of the global financial crisis and its aftermath. In the first stage of the global financial crisis, the conventional and unconventional monetary policy measures implemented by the Federal Reserve System and the European Central Bank were fairly similar. Both central banks focused on providing the banking sector with liquidity in order to restore interbank lending as it was a key element of ensuring a functional monetary transmission mechanism. However, when the global financial crisis transformed to a sovereign debt crisis in the euro area in 2010, the European Central Bank faced increasing divergence in sovereign spreads and the potential insolvency of euro area Member States. Therefore, its unconventional monetary policy measures focused on credit easing by purchasing sovereign as well as covered bonds in order to improve banks' and governments' funding costs. By contrast, the Federal Reserve System massively purchased government bonds and focused on decreasing interest rates and asset prices through the use of quantitative easing.

Macroeconomics is the study of the economy as a whole and of work and saving choices of individual economic agents from which macroeconomic activity emerges. This book takes an integrative approach to that topic, showing how short-run and long-run forces operate simultaneously to determine the behavior of key economic indicators such as employment and real, inflation-adjusted GDP. The first goal of macroeconomic policy is to bring real GDP into line with the maximum attainable potential real GDP-the level of real GDP at which there are enough jobs to provide employment for every person who wants to work and at which government has done all it can to eliminate disincentives for workers to seek jobs and for employers to offer them. The second goal is to promote economic growth, which means encouraging innovation and a business climate conducive to innovation. This book corrects a popular view that a protracted economic downturn is necessarily characterized by an excess supply of labor and goods and a need for expansive monetary and fiscal policies. In fact, and as was shown some 40 years ago, the problem could just as well be characterized by an excess demand for labor and goods and a need for contractive monetary and fiscal policy.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1.0, EBC University Düsseldorf, course: Economic Policy, language: English, abstract: In a globalizing world with increasing international trade and growing markets as well as crisis influencing countries worldwide, it becomes ever more important to evaluate and compare the economic performance of different nations as well as their impacts on each other. One method that allows assessing a country's macroeconomic performance is the "magic square" according to Kaldor (1971). This approach takes four variables into consideration, which should be pursued amongst an economy:1. Sustainable growth,2. Equilibrium of balance of payments,3. Price stability,4. High employment. In the following paper, the economic progress of the United Kingdom within the previous 10 years should be evaluated using the "magic square" as a framework. Therefore, there will be the main focus on the most relevant macroeconomic indicators, such as the growth of GDP, inflation rate, unemployment rate and current account balance, in order to provide a sound overview regarding UK's overall economic development.

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,9, Cologne Business School Köln, language: English, abstract: The following paper refers to the potential of international free trade agreements to create interconnected economic markets, which require a common trade policy of the contracting countries. The difficulty in this approach is to ensure an economic integration of both countries on the basis of bilateral treaties, despite differing cultural, social and economic attitudes. As an effect of the continuing globalization and the increased international interconnectedness, there is generally a rising number of international free trade agreements among countries with the intention to achieve economic growth and welfare that on the other hand simultaneously led to an increased amount of criticism arising from non-governmental organizations, consumer protection organizations or environmental groups. This oppositeness has received a lot of attention during the recent negotiations and implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the European Union and Canada. Similar to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which is a foreseen free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States that has been temporarily suspended due to huge protests, both agreements have in common that they bear more criticism that than any other free trade agreement ever before. There are many attempts coming from EU institutions aiming at harmonizing EU labor immigration policy. These efforts have faced many blockages from EU member states and a common labor immigration policy does not exist. The main question this thesis attempts to answer is why there is no common economic immigration policy at EU level in spite of the benefits this could bring. The main hypothesis is that member states are the key players in deciding whether a policy will be harmonized at the EU level or whether it will remain under the sovereignty of national executives. This study discusses important aspects of labor immigration policy at the member states' domestic sphere and at EU level. As the thesis aims to disclose the role of EU member states in the harmonization process of labor immigration policy, a Liberal Intergovernmentalist framework analysis is employed. This thesis concludes that it is EU member states who are the main actors driving the EU integration process. There is a great diversity across states on labor immigration policy and the importance labor immigration poses for EU members, as yet they have not agreed upon a common policy.

Because I want to find out whether the Swedish fiscal policy was counter-cycle compared to the EMU states1 or not. The EMU states have the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) which set rules for their fiscal policies the pact was introduced in 1999 with the start of the EURO in 1999 began a change and the last actual data I found was 2004 that's why I choose this period.Among other things I want to figure out if the SGP has a negative effect on the fiscal policy in a recession.I start the paper with presenting the so called "Swedish Model" and the changes and development of the 1990s. Then I will present the Institutional framework in Sweden and the Budget process. After this I will present a definition of fiscal policy and start with the examination of the Swedish fiscal policy 1999-2004 present the methods I use and analysis the period. Then I compare the Swedish development with the EMU states and try to find out if the SGP has a pro-cyclical effect on the fiscal policy this would mean for example in a recession that the downtown takes longer and the economic fluctuation is stronger than without the SGP.In the end I present my conclusion and have a brief discussion. In this paper...

Interestingly, this kind of approach was increasingly voiced at various international occasions since the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi-AKP) came to power in 2002. However, once one looks back in history, Turkey during the 1900s conducted a very different foreign policy strategy and viewed its close neighbors with suspicion and mistrust. This study argues that there has been a reassessment in Turkish foreign policy which has helped Turkey to acquire a new role in the Middle Eastern region. In this regard, this research aims to analyze whether there has been a changeover in Turkish Foreign policy and if so, what were the consequences regarding Turkey's relations with its neighbors. Along with that purpose, this paper will elaborate on the factors which have shaped Turkish foreign policy, primarily on economic aspirations. Furthermore, the goal of this research is to focus particularly on Turkey's relations ...

Trade policies form the main economic "buffer" between one national economy and another, i.e. the general and specific elements of each nation's trade policy interact directly or indirectly with those of other nations in all economic transactions across international borders. A nation's trade policy involves specific actions to encourage and promote or discourage foreign trade through the legal, financial and institutional environment within which foreign transactions occur. This book evaluates the trade policy applicable to the beef and maize sub-sectors in South Africa. Issues that are investigated include whether trade policy provides more or less protection than needed, whether it creates more openness for trade and the revealed comparative advantage of beef and maize. The study also shows the level of protection for inputs and outputs, in this case the beef and maize sub-sectors, using the ERP calculations.

Considering the controversies in the political field, with their openings and limits in theory, we considered the political system in all senses what is given, including both political awareness in its psychological and ideological components and political relations, the relationships driven alliance of groups, intermediate classes or relations between institutions and political organizations with a mediating transposition role of social communities political ideology in practical political action in order to conquest, consolidate, control, preserve or defend their political power. With all this evidence, we opted for political system reductionism to the public policy context, at the formulation and implementation level, as policy decisions of the government, correlated with the purpose of choosing the means and the resources allocated to achieve the objectives in a specific socio-economic circumstances. Thus, in order to identify opportunities for measurement of "government efficiency" we involved both qualitative aspects, which focuses on individuals and cases, individual perceptions and experiences, personal values, as well as quantitative aspects.

Monetary policy is that part of the macroeconomics, which attempts to achieve a set of objectives that are expressed in terms of several macroeconomic variables such as inflation, real output, money supply, exchange rate or employment. As a result, any change in the monetary policy will have an effect on these variables. For instance, monetary policy actions such as changes in the central bank discount rate may have an indirect effect on these variables. Therefore, it has been said that as broader financial markets are quick to incorporate new information, a more direct and contiguous effect of changes in the monetary policy instruments may be identified using financial data. Hence, in order to identify the monetary policy mechanism transmission into the stock market, understanding the sensitivity of stock market with respect to monetary policy is very important. This book examines whether current economic activities or more specifically the monetary policy tools of Bangladesh and India can explain stock market returns in short run and long-run horizon by using a number of multivariate tests.

Before analysing the relationship between two economic phenomena in detail, an overview of some of the most prominent empirical empirical studies concerning the relationship between openness to international trade and economic growth in general is provided. As most of them seem to have reached the conclusion that trade influences growth in a positive way, the question for the reasons of this presumably positive relationship arises. Factors which cause or influence economic growth in general as well as various channels through which trade might have an influence on growth are presented in the third and forth section. The importance of various sources of economic and the Solow-Model and the AK-Model are introduced in order to distinguish between long-run and short-run effects of capital accumulation, learning by doing and R&D on economic growth. The remaining analysis concentrates on one channel in particular, namely on howtrade determines a country's import and export structure. The importance of therange of products a country produces is enormous and affects economic growth and welfare. The fifth section introduces the st...

Environmental pollution has increasingly become an issue of global concern because of climate change and consciousness for environmental sustainability. To this end, this paper investigates the relationship between energy consumption, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and economic growth of the G8 countries over the period of 56 years spanning 1960 through 2015 using both the Fully Modified and Dynamic OLS estimation techniques. The empirical investigation establishes the critical roles played by energy consumption and CO2 emissions on economic growth but in substantially opposite directions. While that of the former positively enhances economic growth, on the one hand, the latter negatively deters it. In addition, a long-run relationship is equally established but with the varied direction of causality. Finally, the study offers significant policy implications directed at using energy resource efficiently as well as curtailing environmental contaminants.

Industrial Organization is a central branch of microeconomics that has historically provoked a great deal of debate among economists. Drawing on this background, the author examines the economics of markets, industries, and their participants, and in doing so addresses the implications for public policy towards the business behaviour of firms. Examining both US Antitrust and EU Competition Policy, Industrial Organization in Context takes an international approach and employs classic and contemporary examples throughout to show how key theories are put into action. Experimental tests of models will help you to grasp essential economic questions, while the discussion of economic history allows you to understand where we are today by appreciating how we got there.
