The authors explore ethical issues in one of the most burning and controversial debates currently taking place in research ethics literature. Through empirical research they demonstrate the lack of consensus and harmonization of international and national frameworks that pose impediments to ethical conduct of biomedical research associated with using Human Biological Materials (HBMs). The authors provide evidence that HBMs may be leaving South Africa undocumented and unaccounted for under the guise of collaborative research with developed countries. The publication of this book is timely as currently South African researchers and their institutes attract large sums of funding for collaborative research with developed countries. This book provides important insights into the laws, regulations and guidelines associated with the use of HBMs in collaborative research to researchers, bioethicists, policymakers, research ethics committees and others.

There are two different forms of defending freedom of the press: as an absolute and a relative freedom of the press. The latter is the one predominating in Europe and Latin America and the one providing legitimate regulation to the press. This research is based on the suspicion that in Ecuador the idea of Free Press is one that the government can “freely” regulate. The conceptual framework of the investigation provides different perspectives of freedom of the press and predicts potential consequences to Ecuador’s media practice in the future. The lawsuit against El Universo, recently brought by the Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, was seen as a "claim for silence" to the Ecuadorian press. The case of this newspaper, the largest in Ecuador, is deeply studied in this research and by conducting interviews, the issues of abuse of power, libel laws, and editorial opinions emerge. The findings indicate a contradiction in the perception of Free Press among the Ecuadorian government, the Ecuadorian media owners, and the international community. Furthermore, it also warns journalists about the consequences for the press in the short and long run.

Drawing on over sixteen years of experience consulting to child-/family-serving systems across the country and in-depth interviews with birth parent leaders in Washington state, Kansas, and Contra Costa county in California, Nicole Bossard presents new research on the transformative journey of birth parents who have traversed the broken terrain of hopelessness, shame, and stigma to emerge as powerful leaders in the child welfare systems that once marginalized their voice and agency. Bossard uses the lived experiences of birth parent leaders in the study to illuminate strategies used to move beyond personal despair to craft a better life for themselves and a better system for other parents struggling through. The experiences of the birth parent leaders in their own words help the reader understand the relational dynamics that hinder and help birth parents emerge as partners and leaders in their own lives and the child welfare organization as well. Research and scholarship on the emergent roles of birth parents as leaders in child welfare remains scant. Enough Hope to Spare contributes significantly to a growing body of literature that centralizes the voice and experiences of birth parents, and also makes recommendations to social work students and child welfare practitioners and administrators interested in creating connections that nurture collaborative partnership and shared leadership.

The study examines the role of the press in rural development following that the press do set agenda for public discourse and that press coverage may direct focus on areas or issues needing urgent attention. Specifically, the book is on newspaper coverage of development and non-development matters with a view to knowing whether indigenous language newspapers do better than English language press in that direction as the indigenous language press is expected to be closer to the people than the English language press. The book also chronicled past development efforts and studies on press and development in Nigeria and the theoretical paths and explanations to attaining development and press coverage of development and other people centred issues respectively.

During the last decades, the presence of visual media has increased dramatically. However, very little empirical research has been carried out to determine the implication of the medium photograph as a visual information transmitter. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the characteristics of professional press photos that relate to war and armed conflicts and to examine the framing of victimhood. A thorough literature review as well as an iconographic interpretation of World Press Photos serves to ascertain data in order to permit answering the research questions. The World Press Photo Foundation is the subject of research as it represents the most prestigious international competition for press photography at present and thus acts as an agenda-setter. That highlights the implication of its decisions about professional photographs since its coverage of certain issues biases the international media coverage of the same. It also affects the development of professional photojournalism. In this context the meaning of photographs in today's visual media societies can be discussed.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict receives extensive media coverage, both at the national and international level. As any major international crisis, involving very fundamental issues, the Intifada triggers deep emotional feelings, and thus it offers very good material to the media. In considering the reporting of the second Intifada in the Israeli press, the Palestinian press and in The New York Times, as prime example of the American press, this study examines the impact of the media on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and demonstrates that media coverage of the Intifada has a significant influence on public opinion worldwide and thus on the conflict itself. This research illustrates how the media can contribute to escalation of violence, by exacerbating hatred and antagonising the parties to the conflict through biased reporting, omission or by using a language of incitement. It shows how the media often abandon their professional duty of fairness and objectivity in order best to serve the interests of their own nation.

Kuwaiti online journalism became the source for instant updated information during the disputes. Three different tools (survey, online content analysis & interviews) were used to determine the effect of online journalism on journalist''s practices and the freedom of the press in Kuwait, focusing on the most popular Kuwaiti personal writers'' sites, weblogs & forums. The results show that online journalism affected journalist''s practices but did not replace the traditional practices. The language of online journalism took a different direction from the local press with more freedom to write, discuss, and share ideas online with less fear of government retribution. What was considered a taboo “red line” in the local press became an acceptable “green line” online.

It explores how and whether the research effort in science education has contributed to improvements in the practice of teaching science and the science curriculum. It contains contributions from an international group of science educators. Each chapter explores a specific area of research in science education, considering why this research is worth doing, and its potential for development. Together they look candidly at important general issues such as the impact of research on classroom practice and the development of science education as a progressive field of research. The book was produced in celebration of the work of the late Rosalind Driver. All the principal contributors to the book had professional links with her, and the three sections of the book focus on issues that were of central importance in her work: research on teaching and learning in science; the role of science within the school curriculum and the nature of the science education we ought to be providing for young people; and the achievements of, and future agenda for, research in science education.

Many protected areas struggle with balancing their goals: conservation of fragile nature and promoting recreation. Conflicts arise, which challenge the management to look behind the surface of conflict issues and deal with the subjective forces involved. This book takes a human perspective of stakeholders on issues related to protected area management and presents a communicative model to manage conflicts and create consensus. The literature research explores techniques in conflict management and a survey is used to evaluate the opinion of stakeholder concerning the themes of conflict, communication, and consensus. The survey focuses on the Daisetsuzan National Park in Japan and the Vatnajokull National Park in Iceland with the aim to formulate a suited conflict management approach that can be used in protected area management in general. The findings suggest that despite difference in cultures a communicative approach to conflicts in protected area management may support forming consensus regarding the issues at stake. The findings help managers of protected areas as well as anyone interested to gain better understanding of conflict issues and the valuable tools at their disposal.

Spatial data is a vital national resource necessary for a country’s efficient and sustainable economic, social and environmental development, and so must be properly developed and managed. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), there is lack of knowledge and no clear framework describing the optimal way for stakeholders, users, providers or administrators, to collaborate effectively in establishing a National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). Moreover, the complex, multi-layer and multi-jurisdiction system of government leads to competing interests and mandates in coordinating spatial activity. Previous studies on NSDI in KSA focused on technical infrastructure strategy. However, there is a need to study institutional/organisational issues affecting collaboration in NSDI for KSA. This research presented in this book leads to recommendations for a best practice, collaboration initiative for Saudi NSDI, and contributes to advancing the goals and implementation of NSDI in KSA.
