Arsenic (As) contamination of rice is a major problem for South-East Asia. Effect of selenium (Se) on rice plants exposed to As. Presence of Se decreased As accumulation by 3-fold in roots and 2-fold in shoots as compared to single As exposed plants. Arsenic induced oxidative stress in roots and shoots was significantly ameliorated by Se supplementation. Positive response was found associated with the increased activities of antioxidant enzymes, induced thiolic ligands and phytochelatins in As+Se exposed plants as compared to single As treatment. Selenium supplementation modulated the thiol metabolism enzymes Gene expression analysis of several metalloid responsive genes showed upregulation during As stress, however, significant downregulation during As+Se exposure as compared to single As treatment. Gene expressions of enzymes of antioxidant and GSH and PC biosynthetic systems and PCS were found to be significantly positively correlated with their enzyme activities. The findings suggested that Se supplementation could be an effective strategy to reduce As accumulation and toxicity in rice plants.

Global Warming is one of the challenges that we are facing in today’s era. The effect of global warming is not only limited to human beings but its effect can also be seen on plants. Increased temperature causes heat stress in plants and this ultimately decreases the quality and quantity of crops. The need of this hour is to develop crop plants with enhanced thermo tolerance. In this report we have used data mining techniques to show that heat stress is an important stress affecting the agricultural production. At the molecular level post translational modifications have been shown to be influenced in plants under heat stress. We have studied Palmitoylation, Sumoylation, S- Nitrosylation and Nitration in the plant gene sequences associated with heat stress and not associated with heat stress. We show that sumoylation is an important property which is possibly influenced in large number of proteins associated with heat stress in a wide variety of plants. This property can be used for identifying novel sequences associated with heat stress in plants.

The book is about complex antioxidant system development in Plants under heavy metal stress by which they scavenge ROS thereby protecting cell from oxidative attack. A common feature of different stress factors is there potential to increase the production of reactive oxygen species in plant tissues. ROS are produced as intermediate products in a number of metabolic reactions in various cellular organelles, generated by oxidative stress in plants. AM fungi are helpful to enhance growth and productivity in BT cotton under salt and water stress conditions. Three genera and 33 species were isolated from rhizosphere soil of BT cotton. The genus Glomus was dominant with 19 species, nine species of Scutellospora and five species of Acaulospora were recorded from surveyed sites. Mycorrhizal plants produced more number of leaves than control plants,they were taller than control plants,the roots were also longer in mycorrhizal plants than control plants.The cotton bolls, picked bolls, weight of bolls and weight of seed cotton per boll of mycorrhizal BT cotton was much better than control plants. Plants treated with mycorrhizae protected plants from water and salt stress up to certain limit as compared to control plants. The AM fungi limited the increase in number of Verticillium dahliae propagules.

Calmodulin(CaM) and Ca2+ have been implicated in adaptation of plants to changes in its environment. Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis) genome has nine genetic loci encoding calmodulin protein isoforms. We have used wild type (WT) and T-DNA insertion mutants of seven calmodulin genes in Arabidopsis to determine role of specific isoform of calmodulin in abiotic stress in Arabidopsis.The obtained results suggest that collective amounts of CaM proteins may regulate GAD activity in response to abiotic stress rather than specific CaM protein under different stress conditions. Steady-state level of CAM mRNA in WT and cam mutants provides support for some level of compensation in expression CAM genes in Arabidopsis thaliana.

The blood samples from lead exposed and control males were collected and sera was isolated from them. Different biochemical tests were performed on serum by the use of biochemical kits. The results indicated an increase in glucose concentration in lead exposed subjects.

In saline soils, banana suffered from salt injury with the external symptoms. The caroteniod content was decreased in all the treated plants except in control. In all the NaCl treated plants the chlorophyll pigments was significantly reduced. In abscissic acid(ABA), treated plants chlorophyll content was significantly increased. Membrane Stability Index(MSI) was decreased when the salt stress period increased. In case of Cholorophyll Stability Index(CSI) and Membrane Stability Index(MSI), the butylated hydroxyl toluene(BHT) increased over the other chemicals treated in NaCl stress, where as in acetyl salicylic acid (ASA) increased MSI only. The ASA capable of inducing more ascorbic acid production in more NaCl stressed plants. Peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities were decreased significantly over the period of stress increases. In BHT treated salt stressed plants observed significantly higher nitrate redcutase activity. The persent investigation showed that the abscissic acid(ABA), acetyl salicylic acid (ASA) and butylated hydroxy toluene (BHT) have the potential to reverse the effect of salinity in Grandnain banana plants.

Optimum fertilization management is an important technique to alleviate the adverse effects of salinity stress on plants. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the ameliorative role of inorganic and organic P-sources on wheat grown under salt stress in three soil types deficient in available P. Wheat plants were grown on alluvial, sandy and calcareous soils under salinity levels of 4, 8 and 12 dS/m of saturated paste extract (ECe) and supplied with constant rate of superphosphate (SP), cattle manure (CM) and 1:1 mixture of SP and CM. The results revealed that plants grown on the sandy soil were more susceptible to the adverse effects of salinity compared with that planted on the alluvial one, especially at 0 P. However, plants grown on the calcareous soil were moderately affected. In addition, varying soil type caused significant differences in the aboveground biomass and uptake of N, K, P and Zn in shoots and grains, where maximum values were attained in the alluvial soil followed by calcareous soil. Grains and straw yields and contents of N, P and K in the shoot tissue, grains and straw decreased significantly with increasing ECe from low (4 dS/m) to high level (12 dS/m).

Malathion, widely used organophosphorus insecticide worldwide, induces oxidative liver damage type; Cimetidine is an antagonist of histamine H2-receptor, it has been shown to be an inhibitor of various CYP450 isoforms. Male Wistar rats weighing 200-250 g were studied, exposed to malathion orally for 3 weeks (0.15 mg/kg/day, 2 mg/kg/day, 15 mg/kg/day) and cimetidine 10 mg/kg/day. Malathion affects susceptibility to oxidative stress and possibly modifies the antioxidant defense capacity directly or indirectly.

Hence, this research has sought to reflect upon the relationship between stress and supervisory styles in the reserve centers. This study reviewed and critiqued relevant empirical literature of the past two decades concerned with stress in the workplace. It also visited some historical publications on supervision and leadership styles affecting performances. In all, the results showed that the organizational culture is more related to stress than the supervisory styles in a naval reserve center.

Essential plant nutrients are necessary for plant growth, However, some of these nutrients are added as inorganic fertilizers due to high demand of food arising from fast growth in population which has necessitated the need to expand agricultural activities. ) To evaluate effects of various stress factors on immune response and growth performance of broiler chicks, a total of five experiments using 2000 broiler chicks were conducted. In each experiment, chicks were divided into five groups (A, B, C, D and E), and each group consisted of 80 day-old-chicks. In each experiment, the chicks were exposed to stress factors, such as temperature, stocking density, feed deprivation, water restriction and light. Each chick in groups A, B, C, and E was vaccinated against IBV, NDV, IBDV and HPSV, but chicks in group D were kept as unvaccinated controls. Blood samples from each group were collected on 36th day of age, at 18 hrs for determining TLC, DLC and H/L ratio. The antibody titers of chicks in different groups were analyzed using HI test at days 36th and 56th. The cellular response was analyzed by injecting PHA-P in the wattles of bird during post stress period. The effects of each stress on lymphoid organs were determined. The potential to resist virulent NDV challenge and effect of stress factors on body weight gains and FCR of chicks was also determined.

Root specific expression of the GUS reporter gene was observed when transformed plants were grown fully inside solid media both under –P and +P and on MS media containing kanamycin. However, there was no GUS activity when plants were grown on the surface of the solid media and hydroponically under –P and +P conditions. Morphological root assessment for the knockout plants has shown no difference between the knockout genotypes and the wild type. Thus, contrary to previous result, in this study other stress than phosphorus deficiency factors were assumed to be contributing for the expression of the GUS reporter gene in all the constructs. Oxygen stress, mechanical impedance and stress due to the selective marker during seedling growth were thought to be possible reasons. However, since the effect of growing conditions was not evaluated before, this investigation needs further verification. Additionally, quantifying the GUS reporter gene activity in the transformant plants grown under - P and +P conditions by real time PCR helps to explore the real function of these genes.

The role of antioxidant activity of Thiourea was studied in VIGNA RADIATA plants were supplemented with UV B.This research compared the difference between UV B supplemented plants and Thiourea along with UV B supplemented plants. This study showed that UV B induced oxidative stress as evidenced by increased in lipidperoxidase, catalase, and super oxide dismutase content. The oxidative stress also showed by decreased in glutathione, starch, carbohydrate and chlorophyll content, when compared with control plant. Thiourea added plants showed modulations in UV B supplemented plants, in the amount of biochemical compounds and antioxidant enzyme system. Molecular Docking of thiourea with UV resistant protein showed positive interactions and this shows thiourea have a role in stabilizing oxidative homeostasis. Result of this research showed that thiouera can minimize the effect caused by UV B rays. The plant stress tolerance can be improved with the use of exogenous use of stress alleviating chemicals.
