The Tevatron and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments, unlike the B-Factories, have the unique opportunity to study the production and the decays of b-hadrons with c and s quarks, and among them especially the b-baryons which are the less known to date. The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment pioneered this eld of research. Moreover, it currently has the world's largest data sample of bottom baryons and this is mainly due to the combination of the large accumulated integrated luminosity delivered and the use of the displaced track trigger, a sophisticated piece of hardware, which is capable to select online events with secondary vertices, a typical feature of heavy hadrons decays, thus rejecting most part of the background from light quarks.

The study of rare hadronic B decays at LHCb and at the planned Super-B factories is a valueable tool in the search for new physics. The variety of hadronic decay channels allows for over-constraining measurements of flavour-changing neutral currents. The author discusses several aspects of new physics in rare hadronic B decays. In the first part of the book, the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with Minimal Flavor Violation is analysed. In this model, large effects can occur in rare B decays due to tan(beta)-enhanced corrections which have to be resummed to all orders. The known resummation formulae are generalised beyond the decoupling limit and novel effects in couplings involving genuine supersymmetric particles are studied. In the second part of the book, the possibility of probing new physics in electroweak penguins via hadronic B decays is discussed. Such kind of new physics is suggested by puzzling data in B-->K,pi decays. The author shows that a measurement of the purely isospin-violating decays Bs-->phi,pi(rho) could shed light on this puzzle. A model-independent study and a study of concrete well-motivated new physics scenarios are performed.

The phenomenology of the violation of the CP symmetry by the fundamental interactions is a fascinating subject which, even after decades of dedicated theoretical and experimental research, is far to be fully understood. While investigations of the K and B systems have and will continue to play a central role in this field of research, in–depth examinations of the D mesons sector have yet to be performed with enough precision, leaving a gap in our knowledge. This book describes a search for CP violation in Cabibbo-suppressed neutral D decays to two charged pions or kaons performed using the proton-antiproton collisions recorded at the Fermilab's TeVatron collider by the CDF experiment during February 2002 and January 2010. The result is the current most accurate determination of CP-violating asymmetries in these decays and represents a pioneering measurement of high precision CP violation in the charm sector at hadron colliders that has been of inspiration for the similar studies which are now ongoing at the CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

Major advantages of emulsion techniques used in the CHORUS experiment are the ability to fully reconstruct event kinematics. This suppresses the large background that comes from the decays of kaons and pions. On the other hand there is a disadvantage: low statistics due to scanning load. The improvements in scanning systems and methods which have been done in the CHORUS collaboration, solved this problem. Discrete symmetries as parity P, charge conjugation C and time reversal T, as well as their combinations such as CP and CPT play a fundamental role in particle physics. The CP symmetry violation was discovered unexpectedly in 1964 during the regeneration studies of the neutral K mesons, and result in a far–reaching consequences. In the framework of the Standard Model it implies the existence of the third generation of quarks. Moreover, it is a very important mechanism which could have an essential contribution to the asymmetry between matter and antimatter in the Universe. Parameters describing CP violation in neutral kaon decays were measured with a good precision and at present the main experimental effort is focused on studies of the neutral B and D meson systems. However, there are still several interesting open issues in the kaon physics, like rare Ks meson decays. This work is focused on the measurement of the rare CP violating Ks>3?0 decay branching ratio based on the data sample gathered with the KLOE detector operating at the ?–factory DA?NE in the Italian National Center for Nuclear Physics in Frascati.

In this project we study the phenomenology of models where the Higgs is a bound state of a strongly interacting dynamics at the TeV scale and we assess the LHC potential to discover new heavy colored states. The existence of such new heavy resonances is a prediction of composite Higgs models as well of theories with a warped extra-dimension, some of the most compelling scenarios for the physics beyond the Standard Model which are going to be tested at the Large Hadron Collider. In the first part we analyze the bounds on the spectrum of Composite Higgs Models that come from flavor observables. In the second part we propose a novel strategy to discover a heavy gluon and heavy fermions at the LHC.

The LHCb experiment is built at the LHC collider at CERN. It is a forward single-arm spectrometer dedicated to precision measurements of CP violation and rare decays in the b quark sector. In the Standard Model, CP violation arises via the complex phase of the 3 x 3 CKM (Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa) quark mixing matrix. The LHCb experiment will test the unitarity of this matrix by measuring in several theoretically unrelated ways all angles and sides of the so-called "unitary triangle". This will allow to over-constrain the model and - hopefully - to exhibit inconsistencies which will be a signal of physics beyond the Standard Model. The Vertex reconstruction is a fundamental requirement for the LHCb experiment. Displaced secondary vertices are a distinctive feature of b-hadron decays. This signature is used in the LHCb topology trigger. The Vertex Locator (VeLo) has to provide precise measurements of track coordinates close to the interaction region. These are used to reconstruct production and decay vertices of beauty-hadrons and to provide accurate measurements of their decay lifetimes. The VeLo electronics was designed in parallel with the silicon detector development.

The LHCb experiment is one of the four main experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The LHCb detector is a one-arm spectrometer dedicated to precise measurements of the CP-violation and studies of rare b-hadron decays. The centre of mass energy and luminosity (for a hadron collider) have both values never reached before. LHCb started data taking in November 2009. LHCb relies on excellent reconstruction and trigger efficiency, very good mass and proper time resolution, reliable particle identification systems to achieve the wanted precision on CP-violation parameters. These performances cannot be fulfilled without the detector to be calibrated. For instance, the Inner Tracker (IT) is readout by around a thousand chips, and the data are processed by 42 data acquisition cards, called TELL1. The Tracker Turicensis (TT) data are processed by 48 TELL1 boards. The first part of this book discusses the calibration of IT and TT TELL1 boards, the second part discusses the hit efficiency measurement in the IT. Finally, the last part covers the measurement of the B-meson lifetimes and lifetime ratios in three different decay channels.

Giant resonances are highly collective states of nuclear vibration. The compressional-mode giant resonances provide the only direct experimental measurement of the nuclear incompressibility, a fundamental property of nuclear matter that is crucial to understanding of a number of nuclear and astrophysical phenomena, including strength of collapse in supernovae explosions, collective-flow in high-energy heavy ion collisions, and properties of neutron stars—the “largest nuclei” that exist in nature. Prof. Garg’s group has been investigating the Isoscalar Giant Dipole Resonance, an exotic compressional-oscillation, also referred to as the “squeezing mode”. Dr. Tao li designed a sophisticated experiment to measure the giant resonances of Sn even isotopes between 112 and 124. The experiment is performed at RCNP, Osaka, Japan, in which a high resolution "Grand Raiden" is capable to take such high resolution measurement. Some computational methods, and programming code was developed by Dr. Li to analyze the data. The result gives us the better understanding to the nuclear impressionability, which is a ground stone of the nuclei.

The study aims to explore empirically how far the roles adopted by the mentors of Arabic language student teaching in Jordan coincide with a model of roles suggested in the literature of teacher training. The results of this study are reported in respect of two qualitative research techniques using evidence from the three rounds of interviews with (11) mentors of Arabic and their (14) students and the observation and field notes taken during fieldwork. The findings provide a detailed picture of the actual roles adopted by mentors of Arabic in Jordan at each stage of the student induction. In the first stage, the results of both interviews and observation and field notes showed that different weight was given to the mentors'' roles on both dimensions: the professional and personal. On the professional level, some roles took a major place of mentors'' work during the early days of induction. On the personal level, the social relationship between the mentors and their students was superficial so that the communication between them was limited to answering students'' requests on the academic side of the relationship.

Negative atomic ions are often considered to be perfect objects for fundamental studies of photon-matter interactions within many-particle processes. Investigations of the dynamics of photodetachment can provide useful insight to the general problem of correlated motions of electrons in atomic systems. The recent development of the Many-Body Theory approach, namely the method based on Random-Phase approximation and Dyson equation, is reviewed in the book. The case of study on photodetachment with emphasis on resonant features for a series of negative ions and the newest data on inner-shell photodetachment are presented. The results of the concrete calculations for the very sensitive to proper account of the many-electron correlations open-shell negative ions are compared with the available experimental data. The objects chosen present the wide range of the resonance types - strong near-threshold and window resonances, interference and autodetachment resonances, shape and Feschbach resonances - and give the most telling example of importance of the collective effects. With using the Feynman diagram technique the physical meaning of the considered effects becomes especially evident.

Frequency of retching after treatment of aqueous extract of C. sativum was 10.7+- 0.89, M. piperita was 28.4±0.89, T. ammine was 34.4±0.89 and B. nigra was 41.4 ±0.89. Statically aqueous extract of C. sativum showed the best efficacy in controlling emesis (10.7±0.89). While result of B. hirta statically showed insignificant result (87.6±1.77).

The aim of the study was to develop an observation profile for health education CtC classrooms in the UK. In order to develop a comprehensive observational profile the author drew from a number of resources: own professional experience, review of the relevant literature, some existing standardised observational scales, and a small scale investigation in a CtC classroom in South London. The study was planned in two phases. The first phase was to investigate the characteristics of the CtC classroom pedagogy in a primary school in the UK as the basis for devising a classroom profile. In the second phase the profile was sent to two groups of experts for content and methodological review, respectively. The general consensus was that the profile provided thorough coverage of various dimension of CtC classroom pedagogy. The methodological review established that the profile reflected an optimum level of clarity and exhibited a gradual incline in quality. The tool was revised in light of the experts'' comments. It is hoped that the classroom observation tool will be a useful addition to the health education literature.

First-order basin morphology has been relatively ignored in geomorphological researches, particularly in complicated geology areas. Therefore, this study was done with an aim to explore geomorphology of the first-order basins in the Siwalik Hills. Using multivariate morphological analysis, the study found that 11,200 first-order basins in the Siwalik Hills were represented by seven morphometric variables and eight basin types. The study demonstrated that a unit of first-order basin is suitable to detect morphological characteristics of geologically complex area. Leading morphometric variables of the basins demonstrated the influence of the neo-tectonics, geological structure (dipping), lithostratigraphy, and landslide process in the Siwalik Hills. Morphology of the Siwaliks is more variable than the resistant units of the Lesser Himalaya. This study contributed to the systematic study of the first-order basins, which can be applied elsewhere.

In this study, gk gene was disrupted from xylitol dehydrogenase gene (XYL2) knockout C. tropicalis strain BSXDH-3. The resulting strain was incapable to grow on glycerol. The cells growth on glycerol was resumed by co-expression of gcy1, 2 and 3 genes from Scheffersomyces stipitis under the control of C. tropicalis glyceraldehydes-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) promoter. NADPH-dependent xylitol production was higher in the engineered strain, termed “IA-3”, than in BSXDH-3. The pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) is a major basis of NADPH biosynthesis in C. tropicalis. In order to increase xylitol production rate, xylitol dehydrogenase gene (XYL2)-disrupted C. tropicalis strain BSXDH-3 was engineered to co-express zwf and gnd genes, which respectively encode glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGDH), under the control of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) promoter. NADPH-dependent xylitol production was higher in the engineered strain, termed "PP", than in BSXDH-3. This is the first report of increased metabolic flux toward glycerol metabolic and PPP in C. tropicalis for NADPH regeneration and enhanced xylitol production.

One key scientific program of the MAGIC telescope project is the discovery and detection of blazars. They constitute the most prominent extragalactic source class in the very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray regime with 29 out of 34 known objects (as of April 2010). Therefore a major part of the available observation time was spent in the last years on high-frequency peaked blazars. Between August 2005 and April 2009, a sample of 24 X-ray selected high-frequency peaked blazars has been observed with the MAGIC telescope. A subset of 20 blazars previously not detected will be treated more closely in this work. In this campaign, during almost four years approximately 450 hours of the available observation time were dedicated to investigate the baseline emission of blazars and their broad-band spectral properties in this emission state. Apart from calculating the integral flux upper limits for these objects in the VHE regime, a stacking method was applied to the sample. An excess of gamma-rays was found with a significance of 4.5 standard deviations in 349.5 hours of effective exposure time. For the first time a signal stacking in the VHE regime turned out to be successful.

This book outlines the possibility of combining semiconducting and magnetic functionalities at nanoscale. The pure semiconducting clusters of Ge, C and ZnO have been investigated systematically using density functional theory. The magnetism in these nano-clusters has been incorporated by doping with 3d transition metals, p-block impurities (C, N and B) as well as by introducing point defects. The results have presented an alternate way of inducing magnetism by incorporating magnetic or non-magnetic impurities as dopant and co-dopant in Ge, C and ZnO clusters. The size dependent properties of nanoclusters and effect of point defects are additional factors which influence the magnetic properties of the Ge, C and ZnO clusters. The results of this work are supposed to provide guidelines for realization of spintronic based devices.

The role of indigenous natural enemies in suppressing populations of B. fusca and C. partellus has been recognized. One such natural enemy is the larval endoparasitoid Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron). Two biotypes of C. sesamiae have been reported with differential abilities to suppress the immune system of B. fusca. Eggs of a C. sesamiae population from Mombasa were encapsulated while eggs of a population from western Kenya were not. Total and differential haemocytes were counted in larvae of B. fusca at six different times after being exposed to parasitoids from western Kenya, and the eastern coastal area of Kenya. The total number of haemocytes in larvae parasitized by the C. sesamiae population from Mombasa was higher as compared to larvae parasitized by the C. sesamiae population from western Kenya. Fourth-instar B. fusca larvae were treated with calyx fluid from C. sesamiae from western Kenya before offering them to C. sesamiae from the coast for oviposition, and found that the eggs were not encapsulated. The Wolbachia infection of the coastal type did not play a role in the encapsulation response of the host.

In the theory of false vacuum eternal inflation the false vacuum decays whenever the inflaton potential has multiple minima. The decay means a nucleation of a bubble with a different density in vacuum energy. Inflation may occur within the bubble eventually giving way to the hot big bang with a subsequent evolution that is consistent with current observations. Interest in this picture has recovered as it became generally accepted that a compactification of the extra dimensions in string theory leads to an effective potential with a vast number of minima, the landscape of string theory. In the first part of this thesis the effects that can be expected if the surrounding of the bubble is dynamical are elucidated. In particular, it is shown how the bubble evolves in the presence of a fluid in the background, and moreover, the effects of a radial inhomogeneity in energy density and spatial curvature. Second, collisions of bubbles would disturb the homogeneity and isotropy of their interior, which, in turn, could lead to observable effects in the cosmic microwave background radiation. It will be clarified whether Minkowski functionals are a promising tool to detect such signals.

This study was carried out to observe inter-strain variation at molecular level in the two vaccinal types (B: 3, 4 and B: 6). The 85, 27 kDa major and 70 and 40 kDa minor proteins run on SDS-PAGE were common in both strains. The 50, 32 and 29 kDa major proteins were found in B: 3, 4 but absent in B: 6. SDS-PAGE profiles of outer membrane protein (OMP) showed that 26 minor bands were common. The 50 and 32 kDa major protein were found in B:3,4 and absent in B:6, while 46kDa minor protein was found in B:6 only. The spectral peaks of whole cells, envelope and OMPs could be differentiated between B: 6 and B: 3, 4 by FT-IR analysis. Spectral peaks of B: 3, 4 whole cells were at 644 cm–1 and at absorbance of 5.90, while B: 6 spectral peaks were observed at wave numbers 628, 640 and 651 cm–1 and absorbance at 0.35, 0.66 and 0.67 respectively. The spectral peak was found in B: 3, 4 OMPs at 646 wave number (cm-1), while spectral peaks for B: 6 OMPs were at 628, 640 and 651 wave number (cm-1)respectively.

Earth Observation Science (EOS) is the study of the global Earth land-ocean-atmosphere system through observations. The principal tools for such studies are measurements from space since these provide the coverage of the planet that is necessary to capture the behaviour of the entire coupled system. In addition, surface observations, and measurements from aircraft, balloons and sounding rockets provide valuable contributors to what are now termed "integrated, global observing systems.” Coupled with models, the EOS measurement suites provide powerful tools for research into the factors controlling and changing the Earth system in which we live.
