The Tevatron and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments, unlike the B-Factories, have the unique opportunity to study the production and the decays of b-hadrons with c and s quarks, and among them especially the b-baryons which are the less known to date. The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment pioneered this eld of research. Moreover, it currently has the world's largest data sample of bottom baryons and this is mainly due to the combination of the large accumulated integrated luminosity delivered and the use of the displaced track trigger, a sophisticated piece of hardware, which is capable to select online events with secondary vertices, a typical feature of heavy hadrons decays, thus rejecting most part of the background from light quarks.

The discovery of antimatter in the early 1930s posed a new puzzle: at some point in the past, the universe contained equal amounts of matter and antimatter, which should have annihilated each other completely. However, the existence of galaxies, planets, and our own bodies demonstrates that some of the matter survived this primordial annihilation, while the antimatter did not. This indicates that there must be a small matter-antimatter asymmetry in the laws of physics. Understanding these laws involves measuring the parameters governing them. The best way to measure a matter-antimatter asymmetry parameter called gamma is with particular radioactive decays of short-lived particles created in dedicated particle accelerators. This thesis describes the 1998 discovery of these decays, which constituted the first step toward the subsequent measurement of gamma. The thesis opens with a layperson-friendly introduction, using a simple analogy between particle physics and poetry. With this basic understanding at hand, the reader is led through the details of the measurement and its hi-tech apparatus, obtaining an insider's view of how cutting-edge particles-physics experiments are performed

The phenomenology of the violation of the CP symmetry by the fundamental interactions is a fascinating subject which, even after decades of dedicated theoretical and experimental research, is far to be fully understood. While investigations of the K and B systems have and will continue to play a central role in this field of research, in–depth examinations of the D mesons sector have yet to be performed with enough precision, leaving a gap in our knowledge. This book describes a search for CP violation in Cabibbo-suppressed neutral D decays to two charged pions or kaons performed using the proton-antiproton collisions recorded at the Fermilab's TeVatron collider by the CDF experiment during February 2002 and January 2010. The result is the current most accurate determination of CP-violating asymmetries in these decays and represents a pioneering measurement of high precision CP violation in the charm sector at hadron colliders that has been of inspiration for the similar studies which are now ongoing at the CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

Dramatic progress has been made in particle physics during the past three decades. The B physics is one of the most exciting and rich field in today’s world of particle physics to test the Standard Model and to explore the new physics. One of the most mysterious phenomena in particle physics that remains unresolved for a long time is the CP violation which is directly related to matter-antimatter asymmetry. Until recently, the CP violation was seen only in K\bar K system and it was expected to be significantly large in B\bar B system. In the summer of 2001 the presence of CP violation in the B meson system was established by the Belle collaboration (and simultaneously by the BaBar collaboration) through the measurement of time dependent asymmetry in the decay of B0 (B0 )> J/?Ks. This work lead to the Nobel Prize for Cabibbo, Kobayashi and Maskawa in 2008.

The prediction of the properties of strongly interacting particles using the mesonic and baryonic sectors is of great importance since these hadrons can be easily produced in experiments and hence the theoretical predictions can be veri?ed.

Neutrinos and their interactions are of great interest in theoretical and experimental particle physics, resulting in many theoretical models and experiments in order to resolve their properties. This book focuses on charm production in the neutrino interactions. The analysis reported in this book is based on data collected by the CHORUS collaboration. Most of the data on charmed particle production by neutrinos has been obtained using large neutrino detectors. Usually the decay of a charmed particle is not seen directly, its presence is inferred from the observation of strange particles or final state leptons. This requires large background subtractions. Major advantages of emulsion techniques used in the CHORUS experiment are the ability to fully reconstruct event kinematics. This suppresses the large background that comes from the decays of kaons and pions. On the other hand there is a disadvantage: low statistics due to scanning load. The improvements in scanning systems and methods which have been done in the CHORUS collaboration, solved this problem. This book outlines the theoretical background for neutrino physics, the CHORUS Experiment and then data analysis.

Discrete symmetries as parity P, charge conjugation C and time reversal T, as well as their combinations such as CP and CPT play a fundamental role in particle physics. The CP symmetry violation was discovered unexpectedly in 1964 during the regeneration studies of the neutral K mesons, and result in a far–reaching consequences. In the framework of the Standard Model it implies the existence of the third generation of quarks. Moreover, it is a very important mechanism which could have an essential contribution to the asymmetry between matter and antimatter in the Universe. Parameters describing CP violation in neutral kaon decays were measured with a good precision and at present the main experimental effort is focused on studies of the neutral B and D meson systems. However, there are still several interesting open issues in the kaon physics, like rare Ks meson decays. This work is focused on the measurement of the rare CP violating Ks>3?0 decay branching ratio based on the data sample gathered with the KLOE detector operating at the ?–factory DA?NE in the Italian National Center for Nuclear Physics in Frascati.

In this project we study the phenomenology of models where the Higgs is a bound state of a strongly interacting dynamics at the TeV scale and we assess the LHC potential to discover new heavy colored states. The existence of such new heavy resonances is a prediction of composite Higgs models as well of theories with a warped extra-dimension, some of the most compelling scenarios for the physics beyond the Standard Model which are going to be tested at the Large Hadron Collider. In the first part we analyze the bounds on the spectrum of Composite Higgs Models that come from flavor observables. In the second part we propose a novel strategy to discover a heavy gluon and heavy fermions at the LHC.

Particle Physics or High Energy Physics is the most fundamental field of physics which deals with the underlying structure of matter: the constituents that it is made of and how they interact. Therefore it can be considered as the mother of all physics. The idea of understanding the nature in terms of some fundamental building blocks goes back to Greek philosophers and beyond. However, the modern day par- ticle physics was born with the experiments carried out in late nineteenth and early twentieth century and concerns itself with observing the physical phenomenon at smallest scales. High energy physics experiments have provided starling revelations about the matter: that it is indeed made up of a few building blocks (quarks and leptons), up to the energy scales reached so far, interacting in a unified manner with forces which exhibit high degree of various mathematical symmetries. The unified picture of matter, as emerged from these experiments, is described by the theoretical frame work known as the standard model of particle physics. This book addresses the great milestones in the history of particle physics for a layman, our tools of discovery and charm decays.

Surface plasmon resonances in nanoparticles have numerous promising scientific and technological applications in such areas as nanophotonics, near-field microscopy, nano-lithography, biosensor, metamaterial and optical data storage. Consequently, the understanding of plasmon resonances in nanoparticles has both fundamental and practical significance. In this book, a new efficient numerical technique to fully characterize the plasmon resonances in three-dimensional nanoparticles is presented. In this technique, the problem of determining the plasmon resonant frequencies is framed as an integral equation based eigenvalue problem, and the plasmon resonant frequencies can be directly found through the solution of this eigenvalue problem. The numerical implementation of this technique is discussed in detail and numerous computational results are presented and compared with both theoretical and experimental data. The integral equation based numerical technique presented throughout this book can be instrumental for the design of plasmon resonant nanoparticles and to tailor their optical properties for various applications.

The story of a fascinating man who connected the great politicians, artists and thinkers at the height of British global power and influence.A famed aesthete and patron, Philip Sassoon's world was one of luxury and classic English elegance with oriental flair. He gathered a social set that would provide inspiration for Brideshead. There you might find Winston Churchill arguing over the tea cups with George Bernard Shaw, the Prince of Wales playing tennis with Charlie Chaplin, Noel Coward mingling with flamingos and Lawrence of Arabia and Rex Whistler painting murals as the party carried on around him.But Philip Sassoon was not just a wealthy aesthete. He worked at the right hand of Douglas Haig during the First World War and then for Prime Minister Lloyd George for the settlement of the peace. He was close to King Edward VIII during the abdication crisis, and Minister for the Air Force in the 1930s. And neither was he wholly ‘English’. The heir of a family of wealthy Jewish traders from the souks of Baghdad, Philip craved acceptance from the English establishment, many of whom thought him both foreign and too exotic. He opened his house to his friends but rarely his heart, as he was almost certainly homosexual. In ‘Charmed’, Damian Collins explores an extraordinary product of an age; a man who, before dying prematurely aged only 50, in June 1939, Noel Coward called a ‘phenomenon that would never recur’.

The LHCb experiment is built at the LHC collider at CERN. It is a forward single-arm spectrometer dedicated to precision measurements of CP violation and rare decays in the b quark sector. In the Standard Model, CP violation arises via the complex phase of the 3 x 3 CKM (Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa) quark mixing matrix. The LHCb experiment will test the unitarity of this matrix by measuring in several theoretically unrelated ways all angles and sides of the so-called "unitary triangle". This will allow to over-constrain the model and - hopefully - to exhibit inconsistencies which will be a signal of physics beyond the Standard Model. The Vertex reconstruction is a fundamental requirement for the LHCb experiment. Displaced secondary vertices are a distinctive feature of b-hadron decays. This signature is used in the LHCb topology trigger. The Vertex Locator (VeLo) has to provide precise measurements of track coordinates close to the interaction region. These are used to reconstruct production and decay vertices of beauty-hadrons and to provide accurate measurements of their decay lifetimes. The VeLo electronics was designed in parallel with the silicon detector development.

Beginning with the amulets and talismans of ancient times, she discusses the origins of charms, then showcases a selection of exuberant ornaments from the charm-crazed 1950s and concludes with present-day bracelets. Charmed Bracelets includes suggestions for selecting trinkets around a theme, be it foreign cities or favorite movies, and provides instructions on how to maintain the jewelry. Beyond embellishing a bracelet, Zabar also describes other clever applications for charms: to customize a dog collar, for example, or bedeck the ribbons on an exquisitely wrapped birthday present. A guide to buying charms completes this enchanting gift book. The present thesis concerns the studies on the Bose-Einstein correlations for pions and Fermi-Dirac correlations for antiprotons and protons. The spatial transverse radius of the pion source was determined at $R_{\bot}=0.591 \pm 0.015(stat) \pm 0.034(syst)$ fm, while the source radius for antiprotons at $R = 0.16 \pm 0.04(stat) \pm 0.03(syst)$ fm. The measurements under consideration were performed using data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP. The results of both the author's analyses and other LEP studies established strong dependence of the correlation radius on hadron rest mass. The correlation radii for pions, kaons, protons and $\Lambda$ hyperons were estimated on the basis of correlation functions, which were determined within the model by A. Bia\l{}as and K. Zalewski describing the above dependence. Predictions of the model proved to be consistent with the experimental results.

We first summarize and review the important theoretical and experimental principles of this rapidely developing field and give an overview of the relevant literature. Here the focus is to provide a detailed discussion of the experimental ultra-low temperature measurement setup and the design, fabrication and characterization of superconducting Josephson junction devices. Presented key experimental results include: 1) The first clear observation of the Jaynes-Cummings nonlinearity in the vacuum Rabi spectrum by measuring both two- and three-photon dressed states. 2) The observation of strong collective coupling for up to 3 qubits. 3) A quantitative investigation of the quantum to classical transition induced by an elevated temperature environment.

Although Theoretical Physics, System Theory, Philosophy of Science and other branches deal a lot with very sophisticated mathematical structures trying to create a general image of what systems really are, including their sets of states and the physical quantities correlated to them, this book tries to show that ultimately we do not know what physical quantities are. It tries to go beyond the concept of the influence of the observer on the experiment, seeking to analyze the relationship between the thinker and the systems he is exploring. An important step of doing this is to mark out the significance attributed to the system by the exploring mind and to launch the question if there should be taken into consideration an objective, hidden significance to any system, in particular to physical systems. The book is addressed to those who are interested in Philosophy of Science and Cognitive Theory. As it contains also mathematical details, it is split into two parts : the first one is trying to formulate problems in general terms, while the second one introduces some rigor and deals also with mathematical tools.

Collective Effects in Negative Ion Photodetachment

Negative atomic ions are often considered to be perfect objects for fundamental studies of photon-matter interactions within many-particle processes. Investigations of the dynamics of photodetachment can provide useful insight to the general problem of correlated motions of electrons in atomic systems. The recent development of the Many-Body Theory approach, namely the method based on Random-Phase approximation and Dyson equation, is reviewed in the book. The case of study on photodetachment with emphasis on resonant features for a series of negative ions and the newest data on inner-shell photodetachment are presented. The results of the concrete calculations for the very sensitive to proper account of the many-electron correlations open-shell negative ions are compared with the available experimental data. The objects chosen present the wide range of the resonance types - strong near-threshold and window resonances, interference and autodetachment resonances, shape and Feschbach resonances - and give the most telling example of importance of the collective effects. With using the Feynman diagram technique the physical meaning of the considered effects becomes especially evident.

Earth Observation for Land and Emergency Monitoring

Earth Observation Science (EOS) is the study of the global Earth land-ocean-atmosphere system through observations. The principal tools for such studies are measurements from space since these provide the coverage of the planet that is necessary to capture the behaviour of the entire coupled system. In addition, surface observations, and measurements from aircraft, balloons and sounding rockets provide valuable contributors to what are now termed "integrated, global observing systems.” Coupled with models, the EOS measurement suites provide powerful tools for research into the factors controlling and changing the Earth system in which we live. The objectives of this book are to describe new methods and applications of satellite technology in the fields of land and emergency monitoring. It draws on new research outcomes from the European FP7 project GIONET (European Centre of Excellence in Earth Observation Research Training). GIONET combines industrial partners with universities and research institutes, and this book provides a perspective on Earth Observation applications that is motivated by the cross-fertilisation of both sectors. Hence, this book will find readers in both industry and academia. This book highlights a broad range of innovative uses of Earth Observation technology to support environmental management, decision making, crisis management and climate policies. It uses advanced concepts of multi-sensor image integration, multi-temporal analysis and synergies between data and models. This is a truly interdisciplinary subject that encompasses a range of applications in various fields which are discussed in detail throughout the text. If you are interested in remote sensing applications and looking for inspiration, this is the book for you.

Specially the language teachers can be highly benefited as it helps them to understand their progress in teaching language. Through classroom observation, it is also ensured that the class activities promote better learning opportunities for students. Moreover, classroom observation assists the teachers to know whether students are comfortable with their lessons or lessons should be revised according to students' level. Before classroom observation, observers or peers need to know the several stages through which the process should be accomplished. It is also important to know the purposes of the observation i.e. what aspects will be observed in classroom. Although, classroom observation process is one of the most reliable tasks till now in teaching, it has some limitations. Here we take an initiative to explore the process, purpose and limitations of classroom observation.

Radar image provides instantaneous distribution of wave crests, with image sequence comprising a clear spatial and temporal variation of the wave pattern. A sequence of radar images was used to estimate water depths using linear dispersion relationship. Analyses on radar echo images were done to estimate temporal and spatial variation of water fronts by digitizing time stack images. Longshore distribution of mean shoreline positions and inter-tidal foreshore slopes were also estimated using time averaged images. Wave run-up was estimated from the digitized water fronts with the help of foreshore profile. The study will provide better understandings about radar imagery in nearshore areas. The book is design for lay readers to advanced researchers. Lay readers will get information about radar images, its structures and simple modelling techniques, whereas the researchers will be benefited in detailed estimation of nearshore parameters.

Currently large uncertainties in the budgets of many trace gases in the tropics exist, mainly due to a lack of measurements. To fill this gap we have recently installed FTIR instrument supplied by IMK-FZK (Institute of Metrology and climate research center), Germany. In this book there will be a discussion on source and sink of atmospheric CO for each atmospheric layer especially the upper troposphere and lower troposphere. In addition, the detailed working principle of FTIR spectrometer is given. The data obtained from the spectrometer are retrieved using software based on the equation derived in the “Retrieval Theory” section. There also other topics discussed which are useful for the data analysis. The analysis should help people working on atmospheric research especially those using ground-base instruments for data collection on atmospheric gases, or anyone else who is using spectroscopic measurements can use this thesis to see how the data is analyzed. In addition, people working on space borne atmospheric research can also use it for comparison.

The complexity of quantum chromodynamics in the non-perturbative domain forces physicist to resort to models in order to describe the phenomena of intermediate energy physics and hence this book develops three different quark models to study light and some heavy mesons: a non relativistic quark model with one-gluon-exchange potential(OGEP) and Instanton-Induced Interaction (III); a semi-relativistic quark model with OGEP and III where the confinement of the quark is modeled with the relativistic harmonic model; a relativistic model where the features of the two previous models are supplemented with the introduction of gluon confinement and thus confined one-gluon-exchange potential (COGEP). Both tensor and spin-orbit parts of the interactions are taken into account in all the three models. It begins with an introduction to the quark model of hadrons covering the SU(3) symmetry in chapter 1 and it discusses in detail the constituent quark models in chapter 2. The three models and a description on decays are developed in chapters 3 and 4. The results and conclusions are presented in chapters 5 and 6. This book predicts mass spectra and certain decays of light and some heavy mesons.

The pits & fissures were also not well defined and the tooth appeared slightly yellow. This kind of appearance of the first permanent molars is not described in any text book nor in any kind of literature. The morphological appearance of the first permanent molar looks like an attrition and hence called as an ATTRITION PATTERN and not attrition. such pattern has been often seen in people with full blown diabetes. In our study we have tried to correlate the presence of similar attrition pattern among the patients who are having blood sugar levels in the Pre-diabetic range as per ADA classification. So the early detection of people with higher blood glucose levels can be made and full blown form of Diabetes and its complications can be prevented. Thus this kind of tooth pattern can be a marker to diagnose diabetes at an early stage.

The observed well known Sigma(*+)(1385) and K(*+)(890)resonances are a good test for this method. A survey of new experiments with much improved statistics compared to those early PBC data would hopefully answer the question whethersuch "exotic" exist.

Giant resonances are highly collective states of nuclear vibration. The compressional-mode giant resonances provide the only direct experimental measurement of the nuclear incompressibility, a fundamental property of nuclear matter that is crucial to understanding of a number of nuclear and astrophysical phenomena, including strength of collapse in supernovae explosions, collective-flow in high-energy heavy ion collisions, and properties of neutron stars—the “largest nuclei” that exist in nature. Prof. Garg’s group has been investigating the Isoscalar Giant Dipole Resonance, an exotic compressional-oscillation, also referred to as the “squeezing mode”. Dr. Tao li designed a sophisticated experiment to measure the giant resonances of Sn even isotopes between 112 and 124. The experiment is performed at RCNP, Osaka, Japan, in which a high resolution "Grand Raiden" is capable to take such high resolution measurement. Some computational methods, and programming code was developed by Dr. Li to analyze the data. The result gives us the better understanding to the nuclear impressionability, which is a ground stone of the nuclei.

The first ever B-format edition of Tolkien's complete Father Christmas letters, including a new introduction and rare archive materials. Every December an envelope bearing a stamp from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R.Tolkien's children. Inside would be a letter in strange spidery handwriting and a beautiful coloured drawing or some sketches. The letters were from Father Christmas. They told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how all the reindeer got loose and scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas's house into the dining-room; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with the troublesome horde of goblins who lived in the caves beneath the house! Sometimes the Polar Bear would scrawl a note, and sometimes Ilbereth the Elf would write in his elegant flowing script, adding yet more life and humour to the stories. No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by the inventiveness and 'authenticity' of Tolkien's Letters from Father Christmas. To mark ten years since the publication of the complete edition of Tolkien's Letters from Father Christmas in 1999, this new edition is the first time the letters have been available in B format.

The aim of the study was to develop an observation profile for health education CtC classrooms in the UK. In order to develop a comprehensive observational profile the author drew from a number of resources: own professional experience, review of the relevant literature, some existing standardised observational scales, and a small scale investigation in a CtC classroom in South London. The study was planned in two phases. The first phase was to investigate the characteristics of the CtC classroom pedagogy in a primary school in the UK as the basis for devising a classroom profile. In the second phase the profile was sent to two groups of experts for content and methodological review, respectively. The general consensus was that the profile provided thorough coverage of various dimension of CtC classroom pedagogy. The methodological review established that the profile reflected an optimum level of clarity and exhibited a gradual incline in quality. The tool was revised in light of the experts'' comments. It is hoped that the classroom observation tool will be a useful addition to the health education literature.

The Cambridge History of the First World War is a comprehensive, three-volume work, which provides an authoritative account of the military, political, social, economic and cultural history of the Great War. Reflecting the very latest research in the field, the volumes provide a transnational guide to the course of war and how the dynamics of conflict unfolded throughout the world. Volume 1 surveys the military history, showing the brutal realities of a global war among industrialised powers, whilst Volumes 2 and 3 explore the social, economic, cultural and political challenges that the war presented to politicians, industrialists, soldiers and civilians. Written by a team of leading international historians, the volumes together reveal the ways in which the war transcended the boundaries of Europe, subsequently to transform the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Americas, just as much as Europe itself.

Altogether there are three volumes, each of which is divided into two volumes. The first two are used in the first semester, the third used in the second semester. The course is divided into three stages: the phonetic stage for developing the pronunciation skills and learning common characters, the grammar stage for developing simple communication skills through conversations, and the lexical stage for expanding vocabulary through essays reading, and developing the ability to express themselves. Grammar, words and sentences are put into the real life situations. The textbook consists of six parts: text, new word, explanatory notes, grammar, pronunciation and exercises, containing 100 texts and 3,300 new words in all. Since the publication in 1999, Chinese Course has been receiving warm welcome from the learners and teachers. To meet the increasing needs for the book, it was revised and published again with the joint efforts of the author and the Beijing Language and Culture Universtiy Press. Based on the original frame, the revised edition reduced the number of lessons from 100 to 76, and the degree of difficulty is lowered to enable it to be finished within one year. Outdate texts are deleted, and the contents are revised to make the book timely. The explanations of language points are also modified, and the order is rearranged to make it more convenient for teaching.

The study aims to explore empirically how far the roles adopted by the mentors of Arabic language student teaching in Jordan coincide with a model of roles suggested in the literature of teacher training. The results of this study are reported in respect of two qualitative research techniques using evidence from the three rounds of interviews with (11) mentors of Arabic and their (14) students and the observation and field notes taken during fieldwork. The findings provide a detailed picture of the actual roles adopted by mentors of Arabic in Jordan at each stage of the student induction. In the first stage, the results of both interviews and observation and field notes showed that different weight was given to the mentors'' roles on both dimensions: the professional and personal. On the professional level, some roles took a major place of mentors'' work during the early days of induction. On the personal level, the social relationship between the mentors and their students was superficial so that the communication between them was limited to answering students'' requests on the academic side of the relationship.

In this study, gk gene was disrupted from xylitol dehydrogenase gene (XYL2) knockout C. tropicalis strain BSXDH-3. The resulting strain was incapable to grow on glycerol. The cells growth on glycerol was resumed by co-expression of gcy1, 2 and 3 genes from Scheffersomyces stipitis under the control of C. tropicalis glyceraldehydes-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) promoter. NADPH-dependent xylitol production was higher in the engineered strain, termed “IA-3”, than in BSXDH-3. The pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) is a major basis of NADPH biosynthesis in C. tropicalis. In order to increase xylitol production rate, xylitol dehydrogenase gene (XYL2)-disrupted C. tropicalis strain BSXDH-3 was engineered to co-express zwf and gnd genes, which respectively encode glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGDH), under the control of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) promoter. NADPH-dependent xylitol production was higher in the engineered strain, termed "PP", than in BSXDH-3. This is the first report of increased metabolic flux toward glycerol metabolic and PPP in C. tropicalis for NADPH regeneration and enhanced xylitol production.

First-order basin morphology has been relatively ignored in geomorphological researches, particularly in complicated geology areas. Therefore, this study was done with an aim to explore geomorphology of the first-order basins in the Siwalik Hills. Using multivariate morphological analysis, the study found that 11,200 first-order basins in the Siwalik Hills were represented by seven morphometric variables and eight basin types. The study demonstrated that a unit of first-order basin is suitable to detect morphological characteristics of geologically complex area. Leading morphometric variables of the basins demonstrated the influence of the neo-tectonics, geological structure (dipping), lithostratigraphy, and landslide process in the Siwalik Hills. Morphology of the Siwaliks is more variable than the resistant units of the Lesser Himalaya. This study contributed to the systematic study of the first-order basins, which can be applied elsewhere.
