Standardized Patients (SPs) are lay persons employed extensively within health professional education to help teach and assess a range of clinical skills. Their unique contribution to medical education is a corollary of both their location as non-clinicians and their pedagogical facility with embodied emotions and affect. SPs in medical education teach about emotion and affect, engage affectively in the presentation of clinical material and as a professionalizing group have developed an educational methodology for facilitating understanding and experience of emotion and affect. The author examines the field of human simulation and the work of SPs through critical theoretical perspectives seeking to broaden our understanding of their contributions as a present and future force in health professional education. Central to the examination is the constitutive role of emotion and affect as they are conceived both within medical education and engaged by standardized patients as media through which different knowledges are produced.

This book describes my research on enhancing machines with Emotional Intelligence. I develop a set of affect analysis tools and propose methods for their efficient utilization. The first system, ML-Ask, separates emotive utterances from neutral and in the emotive utterances seeks for expressions of specific emotion types. The second system, CAO, extracts emoticons from input and determines the emotion types they express. The above systems are then utilized in two methods for enhancing of Human-Computer Interaction. The first is a method for automatic evaluation of conversational agents. In this method the information on user emotional engagement during conversation is reinterpreted to specify general attitudes to conversational agents. The second method determines whether emotions expressed by speaker are appropriate for the context of the conversation. The information on affective states of the user-speaker is confronted with gathered from the Internet list of emotions that should be expressed at the moment. I conclude the book with a discussion on other applications for the proposed methods and further work needed for full implementation of Emotional Intelligence in machines.

Communicating with University Constituents During a Campus Crisis

College or university crisis situations can come at any moment. Sometimes, such as with a weather emergency, there is time to plan and take precautions. Other situations, such as campus shootings, can come without warning. With over 4,400 colleges and universities in the U.S. serving 20 million students, emergency situations are inevitable. North Carolina colleges and universities have managed several emergency situations in recent years. Various media, including email, web updates, and social media played an important role for providing official university communications. This study examines the actual and potential use of social media among North Carolina’s institutions of higher education during emergency situations. The study examines how communications professionals at 16 public and 35 private baccalaureate institutions use and perceive various communication methods, including social media, during crisis situations. Study findings are highly relevant to all colleges and universities. This study is also significant because it enhances an understanding of the potential and actual use of social media among institutions of higher education during crisis situations.

Health and Safety is a key issue in any organisation and never more so than in our current recessionary climate where a general claim culture has increased and the incident rate is higher and more costly than ever. But how do business's deal with this issue? Do they continue to use the same traditional approach, where confusing text-rich H&S documentation is given to employees and expected to keep them safe at work? This approach ticks the compliance box but does it really work, does it really keep people safe in their area of work? This research by Paul Cummins explores the traditional approach using qualitative methods of investigation within an anonymous retail chain. Important areas of H&S at work are touched upon particularly within an extensive review of past research in H&S practice. An alternative to the traditional approach is then presented, where the focus is on the employees themselves, the job they do every day, communicating best practice effectively and efficiently, and empowering people to take responsibility for their own safety at while at work.

Emotion in Information Retrieval

In this book, we propose to treat emotion as the principal factor in the system of needs of a searcher, and therefore one that ought to be considered by the information retrieval systems. The main objective of Information Retrieval (IR) systems is to satisfy searchers’ needs. We present a more realistic view of searchers’ needs by considering not only theories from information retrieval and information science, but also from psychology, philosophy, and sociology. We extensively report on the role of emotion in every aspect of human behaviour, both at an individual and social level. This serves not only to modify the current IR views of emotion, but more importantly to uncover social situations where emotion is the primary factor (i.e., source of motivation) in an Information Retrieval and Seeking process. We also show that the emotion aspect of documents plays an important part in satisfying the searcher’s need, in particular when emotion is indeed a primary factor. Given the above, we define three concepts, called emotion need, emotion object and emotion relevance, and present a conceptual map that utilises these concepts in IR tasks and scenarios.

As stakeholders and governments pay more attention to the poor working conditions in many developing countries, companies put more emphasis on the need to conduct responsible production as well as their responsibility toward the societies in which they operate. Several scandals within the clothing industry together with outsourcing of production can be seen as contributing factors to the increasing focus on corporate social responsibility. In addition, CSR has gained grounds at both national and international level as governments and large organizations have come up with guidelines to which companies should adhere in order to show that they are responsible corporate citizens. CSR is thus being increasingly implemented into companies’ business strategies, and companies are being scrutinized now more than ever. With this book we wish to discuss the use of CSR communication strategies in corporate communication within the high street fashion clothing industry in order to determine if they use and live up to the national and international standards for reporting on CSR. The book will be based on an analysis and evaluation of the H&M and Bestseller websites.
