The student protests in Macedonia Serbia and Bulgaria in 1996/97

The study comparatively examines the student protests that took place in Macedonia, Serbia, and Bulgaria in the winter of 1996/1997, with regards to the interplay between liberalism and nationalism. It compares the three similar post-communist countries with non-consolidated democracy through the instances of liberalism and nationalism that could be found in the student protests that happened in a parallel time-period. Specifically, the study tries to find out how liberalism and nationalism coexist in a protest movement, on one side, and in which instances nationalism is present in pro-democratic movements, on the other side. The study shows that in the cases of Macedonia and Serbia the lining of liberalism and nationalism is inverted – while liberalism is in the front side in Serbia, nationalism is dominant in Macedonia. Furthermore, it shows that nationalism is present in Macedonia and Serbia, but not in Bulgaria, because Macedonia and Serbia have issues of contested statehood and unresolved inter-ethnic problems, which are absent in Bulgaria.

Film Media and Nationalism in Thailand

During periods of official nationalism in Thailand, the Thai media played a significant role in promoting government policy. Once the media was opened up in 1997, the patterns of ownership started to change. The media began to change from a government orientated enterprise towards a market- orientated private enterprise. This book investigates the interaction between media and nationalism in Thailand. It looks at the relationship between media owners and political leaders in general. Although the primary motive of film-making may now be turning a profit, films which aim to promote the nationalism or political agendas still exist. Thai filmmakers are either making the film according to the culture of those classes to strengthen the nationalistic awareness from the audiences, or they are using their medium to persuade the audiences to accept their values. Either way, it can be demonstrated that since the end of the period of official nationalism, nationalism is still promoted through film. This media support of political agendas can be seen as the new style to promote nationalism.

Breaking Down the Homogenized View of Asian American Academic Success

The Asian American community is one of the largest and fastest growing ethnic groups in the United States. Among approximately 11 million Asian Americans, there are over 25 ethnic subgroups of Asian ancestry residing in the United States. Often in policy making and selected scholarly research, Asian ethnic groups are lumped into one category, which distorts the disparate reality found among these Asian American communities. High academic achievement is part of the broader discussion of Asian American success in the United States that has prompted the media to coin the term "model minority". The perceived homogeneity of Asian Americans in this image may potentially have harmful effects on children from Asian subgroups that do not fulfill the "model minority" stereotype. This book investigates the educational aspirations and attainment of Asian American students, through an analysis of data from the National Educational Longitudinal Study (1988) and interviews from a small sub-sample of Asian American students in the Bay Area. The results demonstrate a clear distinction among Asian ethnic populations in both educational aspirations and attainment.

Internationalisation of the Top Asian Universities

Compared to its companies and products, universities in Asia have been nearly unknown for people in the non-Asian world. Despite their unfamiliarity, Asian universities have been substantially expanding their presence in global education and research. This book then explores one of the most interesting topics on universities in Asia, internationalisation of the top Asian universities. In this work, internationalisation of the top Asian universities is approached to focus on ‘PhDs’ of their faculty members. By so doing, the author successfully delivers answers for stimulating questions such as ‘Which Asian university is the most internationalized?’, ‘Which Asian university holds the largest proportion of faculty members with world’s best PhDs?’, ‘Which country/university is the most successful in exports of PhDs for them?’ and ‘Which Asian country/university wins and loses in the trade of PhDs among them?’ This book can be a valuable source for scholars in a wide range of fields such as international relations and education, policy-makers in international affairs and education, college managers and students who intend to study at Asian universities.

Non-Muslim Communities in Turkey from Gokalp’s Nationalism Perspective

At the time nationalism emerged in Turkey, there were several competing ideologies such as Ottomanism and Pan-Islamism. However, the victory of Turkish nation-state in the aftermath of the Independence War confirmed nationalism as the dominant ideology and promoted Ziya Gokalp as its foremost ideologue. The birth of nationalism brought the status of non-Muslim population in Turkey, which used to be a part of the Ottoman “millet” system, to the agenda as they did not fit the Turkish-Islamic synthesis adopted by the new official ideology. In this respect, the role of Ziya Gokalp was crucial for he was the first who systematized nationalism as an overall ideology and made the theoretical foundations of Turkish nation-state. This study aims to demonstrate the position of non-Muslim minorities within the context of Turkish nationalism during the late Ottoman and Early Republican eras, drawing mainly on the work of Ziya Gokalp’s texts.

ChinHwee Tan Asian Financial Statement Analysis. Detecting Financial Irregularities

Gain a deeper understanding of Asian financial reporting and how to detect irregularities The Asian region, and particularly China, is becoming a hotbed of investment activity. There have been quite a few accounting scandals in Asia in the recent years – now rivaling those we have seen in the Americas and Europe. Assessing potential or active overseas investments requires reliance on financial statements, the full parameters of which may vary from region to region. To effectively analyze statements, it is necessary to first understand the framework underlying these financial statements and then lay out a protocol for detecting irregularities. It's impossible to create and implement a practical plan without a deeper knowledge of the various factors at play. Asian Statement Analysis: Detecting Financial Irregularities provides a framework for analysis that makes irregularities stand out. Authors Chin Hwee Tan and Thomas R. Robinson discuss international financial reporting standards, including characteristics particular to the Asian region. Tan and Robinson's combined background in academia and Asian finance give them a multi-modal perspective and position them as top authorities on the topic. In the book, they address issues such as: Detection of irregularities independent of particular accounting rules The most common irregularities in the Asian market Similarities and differences between U.S. and Asian accounting techniques An overarching framework for irregularity detection The book uses real-world examples to illustrate the concepts presented, with the focus on Asian companies. As the first ever in-depth study on manipulation and irregularities in the Asian market, Asian Financial Statement Analysis: Detecting Financial Irregularities is uniquely positioned to be a valuable resource in the move toward the next phase of global reporting standards.

Globalization and Militant Hindu Nationalism

This book is an attempt to propose new directions for Christian theology in India in the present context of globalization and militant Hindu nationalism. In recent years, Christians have been the target of violent attacks by militant Hindu nationalists. Critically analyzing the history of Christianity and militant Hindu nationalism in India, this book contends that militant Hindu nationalism originated in the context of Western colonialism, which brought about a crisis of religious, cultural, and national identity among Hindus. Moreover, contemporary globalization is perceived as recreating “colonization-like” situations, only now at a staggering speed and on a global level. The contemporary attacks on Christians by militant Hindu nationalists must be understood within the dynamics of globalization. The Church in India needs to respond to this crisis. The author proposes that through a renewed theological initiative based on the three traditional areas of focus of Indian theology – inculturation, interreligious dialogue, and social justice - the Church can become genuinely Indian and address the crisis arising from globalization and militant Hindu nationalism.

In addition to acknowledging the part culture plays in this behavioral profile, I have argued that factors other than culture i.e., students related and teacher issues play no less a role in the way Asian students interact in the ESL/EFL classroom. Finally, this paper summarizes some of the pedagogical implications of this stereotyping.

Intersectionality of Gender and Race in Asian Female Images

This study is a qualitative content analysis that examines Asian female images in fashion advertisements seen in Vogue from 2008 to 2010. The study employs theories from feminism, gender sociology and media to investigate how and why Asian women have been constructed in a gendered and racialized manner in U.S. advertising. Five categories of Asian female images are generated in this study and findings show that the historically dominant “lotus blossom” and “dragon lady” images of Asian women have cast considerable influence on contemporary fashion advertising. Asian women are not only gendered that legitimizes male dominance and gender hegemony, but also racialized to reinterpret the historical Orientalism embedded in American colonialism that perpetuates the racial hierarchy. This study has significance in exploring media ethics in terms of media impact on “victims” and society. It also calls for Asian women’s agency to break away from the stereotypes and bring about social change. Meanwhile, this study has implications for media literacy educators and media practitioners to sensitize themselves of the gender and racial relations in the United States.

Indian nationalism through the image of mother-child relationship

My book is about the “Mother-Child Relationship in Rabindranath Tagore’s Gora”. Here I am going to highlight the nature of Indian Nationalism through the image of a mother and the relationship between a mother and a child. It is such a mother who does not bother about her own biological child but she is the mother who can embrace all the outsiders as her own children. This is actually our India which is the most liberal country by its nature. So Indian Nationalism must be named as cultural Internationalism which is beyond the narrow boundary of nationalism. India is always worshipped as mother and the most important image of mother is Bengali “Ma” which is mainly described in the writings of Tagore.

Subaltern nationalism in India

This work tries to explore into the factors which turned once-so revolutionary ideology at its inception into a reactionary ideology out to destroy its own creator. Big claims are made today that we live in a transnational global age which has bid adieu to nationalism and its impedimenta. But this claim soon loses its ground when it confronts the following: majoritarian racist attacks on immigrants, sports nationalism among the citizens, cross-border terrorism, non-emergence of a common parliament and government within EU framework. This work argues that this has been the case primarily because nationalism has been for most of its part led by the ruling class of the concerned nation-state. It further argues that we may be able to experience some positive aspects of nationalism if we reconcile this ideology with the subaltern classes. one such effort was made in colonial India by Ambedkar's conception of subaltern nationalism. This book looks with a hope at the young subaltern citizen.

There is no single volume that shines a light on Asia's collective involvement in the First World War, and the impact that war had on its societies. Moreover, no volume in any language explores the experiences Asian countries shared as they became embroiled, with divergent results, in the war and its repercussions. Asia and the Great War moves beyond the national or even international level by presenting a 'shared' history from non-national and transnational perspectives. Asian involvements make the Great War not only a true 'world' war but also a 'great' war. The war generated forces that would transform Asia both internally and externally. Asian involvement in the First World War is a unique chapter in both Asian and world history, with Asian participation transforming the meaning and implications of the broader conflict.

Women's Cinema and Women's Identity in Latin America

The aim of this study is to explore what women’s cinema in Latin America is saying about women’s identities. The question arises as to whether Latin American women’s cinema is reproducing the dominant patriarchal discourses of the traditional cinema or, on the contrary, breaking with the imposed essentialist conception of women. The 30’s 40’s and 50’s were undoubtedly the Golden Age in Latin American Cinema, particularly in Mexico. Unfortunately, the representations of women were not ‘golden’ at all. The images of women were mostly about the three ‘broken figures’: virgin, mother or prostitute. Since the 60’s a new Latin American cinema emerges. This new cinema was critical in many important issues of politics and social change, but still it was not really critical about women’s negative identity widely expressed in ‘the old cinema’. It is since the 90’s that one may easily identify more women filmmakers challenging these ‘broken images’. This study explores some relevant films that have broken the traditional representation of woman and promotes the representations of women as historical and plural subjects.

Prior research shows that race remains a significant factor of inequality in the U.S. The extent to which Asian Americans face discrimination in the labor market is also a subject of considerable debate. This research investigates migration and regional aspects affecting the wages of Asian American men, which have not been much taken into account in the prior research. Using the 5-Percent Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) from the 2000 U.S. Census and the 2003 National Survey of College Graduates (NSCG), this research finds that region and regional distribution matter in the wages of Asian Americans, because cost of living expense is significantly higher for Asian Americans than for non-Hispanic whites. Indeed, this study finds that Asian American men do not face a substantial disadvantage in the U.S. labor market, net of cost of living, demographic, and class factors. Prior research shows that Asian Americans had faced significant direct and overt racial discrimination in the labor market before World War II. Then this achievement of parity represents a historic change for Asian Americas.

Traditional Auteurism and Recent Cinema of Turkey

Over the course of the discipline’s history, there have been many debates on the status of the “cinema”. From the beginning, cinema was subjected to a high-art prejudice of literary tradition since it addresses the masses and is broadly considered ‘simple’ entertainment. The prevailing belief of filmmakers and cinema-writers up to the 1950s was that both the ‘quality’ and art-status of cinema were supposed to be provided by the film’s content. Auteurism was born in France in resistance to such a belief. Rather than being grounded in a full-fledged ‘theory’, auteurism has been simply defined as an approach to distinguish some directors (inherent even in Hollywood) from the anonymous others by their distinctive and consistent ‘styles’ recognized through their oeuvres. In this study, the concept of auteurism is preserved in its "traditional" sense, as an anchoring point to allow this study to explicate the conception and the perception of the "auteur" in the history of Turkish cinema, and then to declare Yavuz Turgul as an auteur in the traditional sense of the term by depending on the data reached after the analysis of his oeuvre from the ‘traditional auteurist’ perspective.

Reading Cricket: The Culture Of Popular Sport In India

The book questions the relevance of cricket—a ‘hard cultural form’ which was introduced during the colonial period, in the contemporary, post reform India. Through a discussion on sports films, and the Indian Premier League—the successful Twenty-twenty cricket league, the book locates cricket a midst the transformation in the imagination of the Indian nation. In India, post the initiation of the economic reforms, it demonstrates, cricket has become a convenient tool to market nationalism and consumerism and has been appropriated by business houses, the film industry and various governments. Such appropriation, the author argues resulted in cricket being constructed as the 'national' game of India. The book explores the effects that the confluence of cricket, popular film and 'paid' sports channels has had on Indian public sphere. It argues that cricket’s affiliation with nationalism on the one hand and with global capital on the other, has facilitated the construction of a nexus between cricket, cinema and satellite television. It demonstrates that cricket also had to undergo a transformation both in its form and in its discourse to suit the political economy of the new millennium.

The Relations Between Asian And African Communities of Kenya

This study investigates the problem of race relations between Asian and African communities in Kenya’s Nyanza region. It examines the roots of Asian presence in the Nyanza region and explores the various levels of interactions between the Asian ethnicities and the Africans within the post-colonial space of Nyanza. Although the literature review demonstrates that some research on the Asian Question in East Africa has been undertaken by a number of scholars, there is little evidence to show that Afro - Asian relations in Nyanza Province has been given scholarly attention. This hiatus makes the study abundantly significant and justified. The study revolves around four fundamental premises. It proposes that forced immigration played a remarkable role in the emergence of interracial relations between Africans and Asians in Kisumu, Ndere, Kendu Bay and Yala areas of Nyanza region. Besides, it assumes that government policies were the main causes of suspicion, tension and conflict between the Asians and the African communities. Furthermore, it supposes the contest between the Africans and the Asians manifested itself in the social, political and economic spaces available in Nyanza.

Nationalism And Migration

This book examines the relationship between nationalism, emigration and identity in Turkey in the post-1950 era. It studies the ways in which the immigrants define their nationality, legitimize their emigration to Turkey. For this reason, it first gives historical background from the secondary resources and memoirs about the immigration from Balkans to Turkey before the 1950s.This book is mainly based on oral history that includes twenty interviewees’ daily experiences and narratives both in Yugoslavia and then in Turkey. It studies the changing nationalities of Balkan immigrants through the effect of Muslim and Turkish identity. In this manner, immigrants tend to base their nationality dating back to the Ottoman Empire times. Moreover, this study aims to illustrate that although nationalism can be created, it has been materialized by political, historical, economical reasons. For this reason, this thesis claims that it is not an imaginary entity. As a result, this book examines at first the difficulties of being an immigrant through analyzing the post 1950 Yugoslavian immigrants’ experiences. At second, it studies the relations between Balkan identities with Turkish nationalism.
