Essential oils are secondary metabolites of various parts of plants. Essential oil extracted from plants have unique therapeutic benefits. These are used in various forms such as lotions ,ointment, lubricants, perfumes, fragrant bath perfumed water, massage and incense. The antimicrobial action of essential oil is one of the most extensively studied aspects of plant medicine. Dried tuberous roots of Cyperus rotundus is known as source of aromatics, used in perfumes and agarbatties. The reported constituents of volatile oil in Cyperus rotundu tubers vary with the source so in this study, the composition of essential oil obtained from Cyperus rotundus Linn. growing in Dehradun (Uttarakhand), India, a new location is compared with the previous study along with its antimicrobial activity.

Antibacterial activity of Hyssopus officinalis L. Grown in Iran

This study was carried out to the determine antibacterial activities and chemical compositions of the essential oil of aerial part of Hyssopus officinalis obtained from the hydro – distillation. The chemical composition of essential oil was determined using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/ MS). Thirty nine components were identified in H. officinalis oil that thymol (18.95%), ?-bisabolol (10.62%), carvacrol (7.73%), n–Dodecan (5.23%), caryophyllene (4.96%), ortho – acetanisol (4.72%), camphor (3.47%), cumin aldehyde (3.22%) and spathulenol (3.02 %) as major components in essential oil. Antibacterial activity of the essential oil was evaluated the micro broth dilution and disc diffusion methods. The oil showed high antibacterial activity against Erwinia amylovora and Klebsiella sp. But on the other bacteria tested is ineffective.

The search for pioneering phytotherapeutic approaches based on the use of new herbal compounds is gaining immense attention in modern therapy because of the lack of toxic adverse effects. Previous in vitro studies have demonstrated lemongrass essential oil as a valuable phytotherapeutic agent for a variety of purposes, covering the composition, medicinal properties, formulation development and toxicology. This book will give an overview of the historical and modern uses, ethnobotanical consideration, quality control, chemical composition and medicinal values, bioactivity reports and toxicity concerns of lemongrass essential oil. A microemulsion system has been formulated for skin delivery of lemongrass oil, making suitable for treating conditions like acnes and pimples. Drugs targeting acne vulgaris should have good inhibitory potential against P. acnes and also better performance to reduce pro-inflammatory lipids in sebum. Future research needs to include more comprehensive chemical characterisation of extracts, quality control and identification of bio-markers of clinical exposure with regards to composition and bioactivity.

Essential oils are complex mixtures of biologically active substances used since a long time as flavouring agents and constituents of number of commercial products. Currently,their importance is more highlighted due to their increasing demand for food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. Recent scientific literature revealed the antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant potential of essential oils. In the present study, some sweet Basil(Ocimum basilicum) species of Labiatae family were screened for the isolation of essential oils.The hydro-distilled essential oils were characterized for their physic-chemical and biological activities.GC and GC-MS analysis of the chemical constituents of the isolated oils mainly revealed the presence of monoterpene hydrocarbons, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes and oxygenated sesquiterpenes. The investigated essential oils exhibited good antioxidant, cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities as measured by different in-vitro assays and experimental models.The variations in the yield,chemical composition and biological activities of most of the essential oils investigat in the present study with respect to species was sugnificant

This research was conducted during two successive seasons, 2002 as a first season in Egypt as one of Mediterranean countries and second season 2004 in Indonesia as one of tropical countries.The present research was designed to investigate and comparison the effect and response of rosemary plant to NPK fertilizers, compost,GA3 and biofertilizers on growth characters,some chemical composition, production and component of the oil. The results showed that,in Indonesia, biofertilizers and GA3 treatments besides control plants have some results of morphological characters,chemical composition,oil production and components significantly more than the results from the same treatments in Egypt.While in Egypt the results of morphological characters, chemical composition, oil production and some oil components resulted from NPK and compost treatments were significantly more than the results obtained from the same treatments in Indonesia. As for tissue culture experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of salt stress on callus growth and oil components of Rosemary plant. the results cleared that; there was inverse relationship between growth of callus and the salt concentration.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is one of the aromatic plants that show great morphology diversity such as inflorescence, leaf and aroma profiles. In world scale, basils have been widely used as a culinary herb. The essential oils of basils were used as food flavourant, medicines and in perfumery industry. In this study, different accessions of Ocimum basilicum L. from different regions were introduced and cultivated in Malaysia. The morphological variability, chemical compositions and antibacerial activity of the basil essential oils were studied. Morphology of the basils is distinctly differed. The yield of basil essential oils varied. The chemical variability among abroad basil essential oil was extremely broad. Chemical compositions of fixed oil revealed that basil seeds oil contained high linolenic acid. The chemical and biological studies of the basil plant are important in helping to protect the plant biodiversity by introducing as a new agricultural crop in Malaysia which can be used as one of the natural resources in producing medicine and hygienic product.

The in vitro antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities of extracts, essential oils and some compounds isolated from six species of genus Nigella, namely N. arvensis, N. damascena, N. nigellastrum, N. hispanica, N. orientalis, and N. sativa, are described in this work. The antimicrobial activities of extracts from seeds of N. arvensis and N. orientalis, as well as chemical composition of essential oils from seeds of both species are reported here. The significant influence of four different extraction methods on the antimicrobial activity and chemical composition of N. sativa seed essential is also described. In addition, the anti-inflammatory effect of four components of N. arvensis seeds, namely dithymoquinone, thymohydroquinone, thymol and thymoquinone, has been detected as a result of this research. This work also summarizes the current knowledge on botany, origin, geographical distribution, uses, biological effects and chemistry of all six species. Some suggestions for further research on chemical and pharmacological properties are also given.

The broiler feed requirement for the present 600 million birds in India is estimated to be about 24 lakhs tonnes per annum and it consists of nearly 35% of oil cakes as a source of protein. Among the commonly used oil cakes in broiler ration soyabean meal predominates, followed by groundnut oil cake. At times the soyabean meal may also touch an uneconomical cost causing higher production cost of feed. On the other hand, the presence of aflatoxin in groundnut oil cake has impaired its use at higher inclusion levels. Hence, scientists are on the look out for an alternate source of cheaper oil cake with low level of aflatoxin. One such alternate is the sesame oil cake which contains on an average 32% crude protein, 8-10% oil and total oil and albuminoids of 40-42% and costing lower than soyabean meal and groundnut oil cake. It has been reported to be rich in essential amino acids namely methionine and cystine. Sesame oil cake which is produced to a level of 2,55,000 tonnes per annum in India (1997-98) and about 25,000 tonnes in Tamil Nadu is mostly used for feeding cattle. Hence it has proposed to evaluate the chemical composition and feeding value of sesame oil cake for broilers.

The volatile fraction composition of commercially produced Citrus oils was objective of this work by using GC-MS. More than fifty components were identified in the oils using their mass spectra and linear retention indices. The monoterpene limonene was the most abundant component even trough not in a quantity expected for a fresh essential oil. Aldehydes, followed by alcohols and esters, were the main components in the oxygenated fraction. Aldehydes were the major oxygenated components in the sweet orange oil, whereas alcohols and esters were present in higher amounts in the bitter orange oil. Among them, nonanal, decanal and linalool are the most important components for the flavor of sweet orange oil and carvon is the most important ketone for the flavor of bitter orange oil in combination with the other components. The amount of carvon gives a good indication about the freshness of the oil and the quantities of ?-pinene and ?-pinene, sabinene and myrcene give an indication about the natural or artificially changed composition of the essential oils.

Chemical composition and some physico-chemical parameters of the Physalis peruviana fruit juice were investigated. The antioxidative potential of fruit juice was assessed by means of bleaching of the stable 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals. The yield of juice is extremely high and the juice is rich sources of sugars as well as water- and fat-soluble bioactives. Goldenberry pomace (seeds and skins) represent the waste obtained during juice processing (ca. 27.4% of fruit weight). In the present contribution, the potential of goldenberry pomace for use as a substrate for the production of edible oil was evaluated. Toward developing goldenberry as a commercial crop, the results provide important data for the industrial application of goldenberry. The study also covers the chemical composition and some fractional properties of pomace oil including fatty acid profile and other fat-soluble bioactives (i.e. sterols, tocopherols and phenolics). Pomace oil was tested for its radical scavenging activity toward the stable 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and their oxidative stability.

Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)is a sophisticated, quick and reliable analytical technique for the separation, identification and quantitative determination of complex mixtures of compounds in general and essential oils in particular. The volatility and polarity of essential oil components make capillary GC-MS the technique of election for their analysis. Compound identification by GC-MS is mainly based on mass spectra or by chromatographic data (Kovats indices, linear retention indices, relative retention time) measurable with FID (flame ionization detector) or TCD (thermal conductivity detector) or better by both. Enantioselective or chiral recognition (ES-GC-MS)of essential oil components is one of the most important achievements reached in essential oil analysis during recent times enabling to determine the enantiomeric excess (EE) in an essential oil sample. The present work reports the essential oil composition of some unexplored aromatic plants like Rhododendron lepidotum, Nepeta laevigata and Artemisia pallens growing in Jammu and Kashmir.

Oil is a primary metabolite and one of the three macronutrients, along with protein and carbohydrates that provide energy for our body. Oil is essential to our health because it supports a number of our body's functions. The determination of fatty acids composition was of great importance in establishing the oil quality. The qualitative and quantitative determinations of the constituents were done by gas chromatography coupled with FID detector. A total of 50 cooking oil samples of five local brands were collected from different market of Dhaka city and analyzed for relative percentage of fatty acids composition. The mean value of the relative percentage of fatty acids composition in different branded cooking oil sample were found in a range caprice (0.86-2.29%), lauric(7.01%), myristic(1.04%), palmotelic(3.19%), palmitic(32.92-76.64%), linoleic(1.55-49.82%), oleic(0.86-2.29%), stearic(2.39-8.93%), arachidic(1.20-12.14%), bhenic(0.86-2.29%) and lignoceric acid(0.86-2.29%).

Storage studies indicated that LDPE packet was better in comparison to glass jar.

Alteration of fatty acid composition in soybean oil

Soybean is one of the major sources of vegetable oil all over the world contributing 30 % of world’s edible oil. The soybean oil contains almost 60 % of polyunsaturated fatty acids which imparts off-flavor and thus poor shelf life to the oil. The hydrogenation process routinely used to overcome this problem leads to the production of trans fats which in turn increases the chances of developing heart diseases. In contrast, oil with high mono-unsaturated fatty acids is more stable, avoiding need for hydrogenation of this oil. Nowadays there is increasing demand for the oils with high mono-unsaturated fatty acid content among consumers and food industries. In the present study soybean mutants with high oleic acid content have developed using physical and chemical mutagens. Molecular characterisation, Agronomic performance of all HOMs and G x E interaction for mutants was studied. Also a non destructive, rapid method for fatty acid estimation was developed. These HOMs will be very important resources for the current soybean breeding programs aimed at improving soybean oil quality. To our knowledge this is the first ever report of modifying fatty acid composition of soybean in India.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is known locally in Sudan as “rihan”. The plant is aromatic and exists in Sudan as a wild plant, widely spread, as well as cultivated for ornamental purposes. There is no use for basil herb in Sudan. The main objectives of this study, to analyze the chemical constituents of basils especially essential oil components accordingly, it will be possible to classify Sudanese basils according to the world-wide known classifications and to investigate some biological activities of basil oils. The seed (fixed) oil is another economic product from basil plants since this oil has potential industrial uses. However, Sudanese basils have so far not been chemically evaluated or investigated to determine essential oil composition and subsequently classify Sudanese basils into chemical groups or profiles in order to suit world market requirements especially if ever basil is to be commercially produced in Sudan as an agricultural crop for export. Such classification will help in selecting the right cultivar to grow for a specific market and knowing the oil constituents will help to identify the end use of the oil, as food flavours or for biological activity.

Utilization of Bitter Orange Industrial Waste in Food Processing Field

This work was designed to throw some lights on the chemical characteristics of bitter orange manufacturing wastes including flavedo layer and seeds. Therefore, both flavedo and seeds of fresh bitter orange fruits were individually separated. Chemical composition and some phytocompounds of both seeds and flavedo were estimated. Moreover, antioxidant power of flavedo extracts (water and ethanolic aqueous solutions) was determined. Physical and chemical properties of bitter orange seed oil were also studied. Defatted bitter orange seed flour was subjected to physicochemical testes including foam and whipping properties, water and oil holding capacity. In addition, possibility of utilization of dried flavedo powder and its extracts as natural antioxidant as well defatted seed flour in the field of backing process (biscuit and balady bread) were also performed. The obtained results revealed that 80% ethanolic extract had high antioxidant properties. Bitter orange seed oil had chemical and physical properties close to corn oil. Also, the seed flour could be used at 2.5% to supplement the balady bread as a plant protein without any drawback in the organoleptic properties.

The physicochemical properties and fatty acid composition of Madhuca longifolia (J.Konig) J.F.Macbr. (Mahua) and Semecarpus anacardium Linn. (Bhilamo) seeds oil were investigated. The oil was extracted in a soxhlet apparatus using hexane and evaluated for acid value, iodine value, peroxide value saponification values, reflective index and moisture content. The oil was also analyzed for different element viz. Ag, Al, B, Ba, Bi, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, K, Li, Mn, Na, Ni, Au,etc using ICPMS. The fatty acid profile of the oil was determined by GC-MS. For each analysis Mahua oil was compared to Bhilamo oil. The physicochemical analysis of Bhilamo oil showed less values viz. acid value as compared to Mahua oil. The different element analysis showed that gold and silver like important elements were found in both the oil at different levels. The qualitative analysis showed very similar trend in their fatty acid composition, in which 15 compounds were found in Mahua oil, while 18 compounds were found in Bhilamo oil. The study suggest that physicochemical properties and fatty acid profile of Bhilamo and Mahua has been done which can be use for further research on these plants.

Laboratory studies were conducted at the Crop Science Laboratory of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Nigeria and at the Behavioural and Chemical Ecology Department of International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology Nairobi, Kenya to determine the efficacy of some plant products and their essential oils for Sitophilus zeamais control in stored maize grains. The constituent compounds of the essential oils were identified through Gas Chromatography (GC), Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and GC- Co injection with the authentic standards. The proximate and chemical analyses revealed that there was no adverse effect on the basic food components and mineral elements in the grains treated with the plant products. Eucalyptol (1, 8 Cineole) had the highest percentage composition in both X. aetiopica and V. amygdalina essential oils (26.63 and 25.11%, respectively. Maize grains treated with the essential oils significantly reduced the number of progeny produced by S. zeamais. In view of the activity of these essential oils and their constituents, it is suggested that these plants are suitable for possible exploitation in insect pest control.

Fast pyrolysis of sewage sludge (SS) for bio-oil production is considered as a promising alternative technology instead of its less acceptable common disposal processes. However, high nitrogen content in SS represents a drawback of pyrolysis use due to the formation of nitrogen containing species (NCSs), causing severe environmental pollution during the utilization as fuel. It is of great importance to study the formation, distribution, and chemical composition of NCSs in pyrolysis products of SS in order to minimize the nitrogen content for fuel use or effectively convert them for chemical use. Main investigations include: (1) understand the effects of temperature and sweeping gas flow rate on the yields of pyrolysis products and the distributions of carbon and nitrogen; (2) pyrolysis of SS and biomass in an internally circulating fluidized-bed (ICFB) to evaluate bio-oil production; (3) fractionation of the bio-oil from the SS fast pyrolysis by silica-gel column chromatography and identification of organonitrogen compounds in the fractions; (4) study the formation and separation of triacetonamine (TAA) in the SS bio-oil using acetone as the absorption solvent.

Biodiesel was synthesized from vegetable oils by base-catalyzed transesterification with methanol in the presence of NaOH. The optimization of experimental parameters was established to achieve the maximum yield of product. The physical and fuel properties of biodiesel like dynamic viscosity, kinematic viscosity, acid number, density, flash point, cetane number, cloud point and pour point were determined and found comparable to ASTM standards. Prepared biodiesel was chemically characterized by FT-IR, NMR (1H & 13C) and GC-MS to elucidate the identification, quantification and chemical composition. The synthesis of biodiesel was confirmed by comparison of FT-IR and NMR (1H & 13C) analysis of oil and biodiesel. GC-MS analyses identified the chemical compositions of FAMEs in biodiesel and were verified by retention time data and mass fragmentation pattern.

At present, the demand for Rosmarinus officinalis is increasing due to its use in traditional medicine, pharmaceutical industries, cosmetic fields and agribusiness, food preservation and fragrance industries, aromatherapy and for the quality of their essential oil. Significant variations in the chemical composition of the essential oils of Rosemary as well as its aroma and its medicinal characteristics (antimicrobial and antioxidant properties) have been reported with relation to the geographic origin. Moreover, the antimicrobial activities of Hexane Crude Extracts (HCE) and hydrodistilled essential oils of Rosmarinus officinalis leaves are tested in vitro by paper disc bioassay methods and showed high antibacterial inhibition activities and moderate antifungal inhibition. Phytochemical screening results showed that the antimicrobial activity of the HCE of the leaves of Rosmarinus officinalis is due to the presence of flavonoids, phenolic compounds and triterpene. The application of traditional alkaline liming materials to acid soils for the amelioration of acidity is a common practice. However, the alkaline nature and the need for environmentally acceptable disposal options for metallurgical slag have prompted its use as a liming material on acid agricultural soils. In this study the effect of usage of alkaline metallurgical slag from Steel factory from Smederevo, Republic of Serbia (owned by U.S. Steel), compared to the effects of other traditional lime materials in combination without and with organic and mineral fertilizers, on chemical properties of two types of acid soils and chemical composition of spring barley was investigated. All the lime materials, along with metallurgical slag, showed positive effects both on chemical properties of experimental acid soils and elemental composition of barley.

A detailed investigation has been made on interfacial and rheological properties of alkali, polymer and surfactant system. The experimental data on physico-chemical properties were analyzed to find an optimum formulation of different chemicals for ASP flooding. Experimentally it has been found that the surface tension and rheological behavior of surfactants and polymers solutions are significantly influenced by salts and alkalis. A new eco- friendly surfactant was extracted from soap nut and derivative of SDS was synthesized and their interfacial properties for chemical flooding are very much attracting. The additional recovery of oil over water flooding was ~19% with natural surfactant-polymer and ~24% when only alkali-natural surfactant-polymer was used. A series of flooding experiments were conducted through Sand Pack with different composition of alkali, surfactant and polymer. Different sets of ASP flooding gives the additional oil recovery ~23-31% over water flooding. SDS derivative gives additional oil recovery ~31% using very small concentration of surfactant whereas this result gives comparatively at higher concentration of SDS solution.

The physicochemical properties and fatty acid composition of Argemone mexicana L. and Celastrus paniculatus Willd. seeds oil were investigated. The oil was extracted and evaluated for different physicochemicals properties and elemental analysis by ICPMS. The fatty acid profile of the oil was determined by GC-MS. The physicochemical analysis of Darudi oil showed less values viz. acid and iodine value as compared to Malkangni oil. The different elemental analysis showed that gold and silver like important elements were found in both the oils at different levels. The Ca, Na, K like elements were also found in both the oils at different levels. The quantitative analysis of two oils showed that fatty acid composition, in which palmitic acid was the most abundant in both the oil followed by linolenic acid in Darudi oil and palmitoleic acid methyl ester was found in Malkangni oil. The qualitative analysis was very similar in their fatty acid composition, in which 26 compounds were found in Darudi oil, while 26 compounds were found in Malkangni oil. The results suggest that Darudi is suitable as a new source of vegetable oil with potential for domestic and cosmetic industries.

Phytochemical Investigation of Citrus limetta Peel Oil

The essential peel oil of Citrus limetta var. Mitha (Sweet lime) extracted by steam distillation was assessed for chemical constituents and antimicrobial activity. Gas chromatographic analysis identified 17 constituents among which Limonene (95.98 %) was found as major component followed by camphene (1.79 %), while the remaining terpenes were less than 1%. The results of antimicrobial activity of essential oil tested by disc diffusion method, against different against bacteria and fungi showed that it exhibited maximum zone of inhibition against Bacillus cereus (31.0mm) and Bacillus subtilis (29mm) followed by Staphylococcus aureus (25.3mm), whereas the minimum zone of inhibition was shown by Fusarium oxysporum (11mm) after 48 hours of incubation at their respective temperature (370C for bacteria and 250C for fungi). The inhibition zones, measured after 48 hours and 96 hours, showed that it was active against all tested bacteria and fungi. The results of our study showed that essential oil of Citrus limetta var. Mitha peel can be an effective medicine against different pathogenic microbes.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of some chemical materials on the physical and chemical properties of dental stone. Accordingly, three types of chemical materials (rosin, nigella stavia oil and sodium lauryl sulfate) were incorporated into three kinds of type III dental stone (Zeta, Elite and Dental stone) at four concentrations. The physical properties evaluated were water-powder ratio, setting time, setting expansion, compressive strength and hardness. The evaluation of chemical properties was done by the use of infrared and ultraviolet spectrophotoscopy.The results revealed that the incorporation of these chemical materials into each type of dental stone resulted in changing their evaluated physical properties; this change varies with the type, concentration of the added chemical material and type of dental stone being used. The change in the physical properties has been shown to be correlated with the changes in the chemical structure of dental stone as it became clear by comparing the ir-specra and uv-spectra of dental stone before and after the addition of the chemical materials.
