Corrosion initiation and growth rate are important properties in maintaining structural integrity, especially for surface and pit corrosion of common infrastructure and transportation metals. In this study, the surface corrosion pit initiation and growth rate on Aluminum 2024(common aerospace alloy) and Steel 304(common alloy for infrastructure) in different pH solutions was measured and values were analyzed by image analysis over a scheduled time. A MATLAB algorithm was developed for detecting the initiation and growth rate of pits as a function of time. The developed algorithm was validated with simulated specimen as well as experiments conducted corrosion specimen. Based on the result of obtained, the MATLAB algorithm predicts the right trends and power law radial xii corrosion pit growth rates and should be useful for corrosion initiation and growth predictions in various metals.

The influence of hydrodynamic conditions on the formation and stability of corrosion inhibitor layer formed on mild steel surface during pipeline transportation process was investigated. The investigation involved the effect on corrosion rate of exposure time and Reynolds number. The investigation showed that in both solutions, the corrosion rate increased with Reynolds number and decreased with exposure time. The results also revealed that the formation and the development of the inhibitor layer in corrosive media are dependent on the respective flow velocities and exposure time.

Within the biosphere every object is influenced by microbial activities. A very unfamiliar case is represented by the microorganisms involved in the process of corrosion of different metals and their alloys. Many workers have reported bacteria responsible for initiating, accelariting and promoting the process of corrosion. While several recent authors have also documented corrosion inhibiting/controlling roles of microorganisms. It appears that like a healthier balance between the normal microbiota and pathogens, required for maintaining health of a host; a comparable balance among the members of microbial community of soil is required for protecting the buried mild steel pipes from corrosion based losses. This work reports isolation of both corrosion enhancing as well as corrosion controlling bacteria from an identified location. The bacterial isolates were then studied under laboratory but field simulated conditions to explore the roles of the monocultures of both catogaries of the bacteria. While effects of their co-cultures have also been delineated in comparable experimental set up. The findings are helpful in controlling corrosion of soil buried mild steel pipes.

Waste coca cola plastic bottles were subjected to depolymerization using mono ethanol amine (MEA) in the presence of sodium acetate as catalyst, the product bis(2-hydroxy ethylene terephthalate amide(BHETA) was compared with sodium dichromate (Na2Cr2O7) as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in 0.5M HCl and 0.5M H2SO4 at ambient temperature. Results indicated that the rate of corrosion of the mild steel increased in the absence of both inhibitors and decreased with increase in concentration. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behavior of mild steel in the presence of 50, 100, 150 and 200ppm inhibitor concentrations was also studied. The associated activation energy of corrosion and other thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy of adsorption (?Hads), adsorption equilibrium constant (Kads) and standard free energy of adsorption (?Gads) were calculated.

Detonation Gun thermal spraying process was used for coating on boiler steel. SEM/EDAX, XRD and X-ray mapping analysis done to reveal the microstructure and compositional features of boiler steel. The microstructure indicates uniform and dense coating. Thermogravimetric techniques is used to investigate the erosion-corrosion behavior at 900?C for 1000 hours. SEM/EDAX, XRD and X-ray mapping techniques were used to analyze the corrosion products.

The effect of silica nanoparticles on corrosion of steel by molten carbonate eutectic (42.7% Li2CO3, K2CO3) was investigated. The experimental design was based on static coupon immersion methodology where a coupon (material under study, in this case a rectangular stainless steel specimen of SS304 with dimensions approximately 5X20X.6mm and weight .5gm) is exposed to a static corroding environment for predetermined periods of time. The testing times were 2, 4 and 6 weeks. The temperature during testing was maintained at a constant 520C. The instantaneous corrosion rates were determined by normalizing the mass loss with respect to time and area. The mass loss was determined by descaling the corroded steel coupons using concentrated hydrochloric acid. The instantaneous corrosion rates obtained from all three times showed a reduction in corrosion of steel by molten carbonate eutectics when doped with silica 1% by weight in comparison to the molten base carbonate eutectics. The results showed that doping the carbonate eutectic with silica nanoparticles (1% by weight) reduced the corrosion of steel by half in comparison to the corrosion without doping.

Cooling water systems are exposed to many types of corrosion and scale problems. Water-formed deposits result from naturally occurring minerals precipitating from water to form scale. Scales built up on surfaces can be extremely hard and difficult to remove. These phenomena have a great economic impact, since the first involves deterioration of metallic surfaces by the medium, and the second causes loss of capacity for thermal exchange. Scaling and corrosion are usually interdependent. When non –uniform formation of scale occurs, corrosion is often present particularly under the deposit. This book describes an experimental study on inhibition of these problems by organic inhibitors. The performance of the selected compounds as scale inhibitors was determined in terms of the amount of soluble calcium ions in solution. Also, the work was extended to study the corrosion inhibition effect of the selected compounds on carbon steel surface in contact with cooling water using both potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. It was found that the selected compound acts as a good scale and corrosion inhibitor.
