Although a number of methodologies exist for Business Process Re-design (BPR), Supply Chain Re-design (SCR) and e-business process design, there is a lack of an integrated BPR methodological framework to support Supply Chain Integration (SCI). This book proposes a detailed framework based on integrating a number of different methodological strands from the literature. A literature review was conducted in three different domains - business process re-design, supply chain re-design and e-business process design-. The literature review revealed potential for integrating elements of a number of different methods and techniques found in different methodological strands into a framework for conducting BPR to support SCI. Accordingly a number of relevant methodologies were identified, decomposed and compared at their stage and technique/method level to identify a combination for development of the integrated framework. The proposed BPR methodology can be applied in any company or sector; methods and techniques incorporated are not specific to any sector. The proposed BPR methodology proposed constitutes an aid for supply chain practitioners in the construction of SCI.

In a global marketplace supply chain integration is recognised to be one of today’s competitive advantages. This exploratory research utilised a stepwise methodology to investigate pathways to supply chain integration. First, value streams where audited applying Quick Scan Methodology. Next, internal and external barriers to supply chain integration were investigated. Finally, longitudinal case studies were used to investigate ways of supply chain integration. In total, some 240 person days were spent in the field to investigate supply chain integration in practise. The research revealed that supply chain integration practise rarely resembles the theoretical ideal. Further, every case company was found to face significant managerial, socio-cultural barriers to supply chain integration. Good top management support and favourable external dependencies offer the best setting for enhancing supply chain integration in practise. If those are not present companies seem to choose the path of least resistance. Finally, this study yielded some early insights that the speed of supply chain integration development in practise follows a learning curve trajectory.

Supply Chain Management has become essential for manufacturing firms worldwide. Supply Chain Integration is a major topic in this field mainly because it is essential to optimize customer satisfaction. Only by integrating all aspects of the supply chain can customer satisfaction be optimized. Olhager and Selldin (2004) explained the current Supply Chain Integration status among Swedish manufacturing firms. According to Olhager and Selldin companies were starting to appreciate the importance of the supply chains in which they operate. However, most firms had a long way to go to take full advantage of the promises of supply chain integration. They found that in Sweden in 2004 awareness of planning and control techniques and communication means was high. And they thought work on increasing and improving supply chain integration and collaboration would be strengthened in the near future. Based on previous research it is useful to explain the current supply chain integration status to notice what happened in the past years. Have trends in this field proceeded as expected?

Despite its benefits, structuring supply chain network is a complex decision making process. At strategic level companies have to decide where to locate new facilities, how to allocate resources to the various facilities, and how to manage the transportation of products through the chain in order to satisfy customer demands. At planning and operational level, companies must collect data and deal with SC decisions regarding to facility, transportation network, inventory, supplier, cost, customer and market, system wide and policy, and any connections among them. It is also stressed that “the chain is as strong as the weakest link”. This work is helpful to analyses the existing practices and enable to develop some strategic methodologies to integrate the supply chains for manufacturing industry. This work contributes to the debate on how uncertainty and concepts of sustainable development can be put into modern Supply Chain Network (SCN). First, we study the literature review, which is a review of the current state of the art of Supply Chain Network Design (SCND) approaches and resolution methods. Second, we propose a new methodology for multi-criteria SCND as well as its application to real SCN, in order to satisfy the customers demand and respect the environmental, social, legislative, and economical requirements. Third, we present a multi-objective model that captures a compromise between the total cost and the environment influence. After that, we develop a novel heuristic solution method based on decomposition technique, to solve large scale SCND problems. Finally, we use two-stage stochastic programming approach to model the SCN under demand uncertainty. Then, we address uncertainty in all SCN parameters, we use possibilistic linear programming approach to model the problem and we validate both approaches in a large application case.

Supply chain management is one of the most critical issues in today's managerial research. To effectively manage a supply chain, efficient design of the entire network should be established. Researchers have produced extensive literature in this field. Many of the issues related to supply chains have been considered separately in these designs. These issues include location of facilities, allocation of customer demand, multi-commodity, multi-period planning, inventory, production, and distribution. Researchers have mostly addressed these different issues separately, and have taken one, two or three of the previous issues at most, simultaneously. In this book, a mathematical model that treats such limitations in the literature is constructed. The proposed model is a capacitated three echelons multi-commodity dynamic production-distribution model with inventory considerations. Solution methodology of the model is presented, and the model is implemented to a real-world industrial case study. The book is meant to provide some novel analytical insights for academicians and practitioners of supply chain management and network design.

The supply chain (SC) can be understood as the integration of all business entities that work together in order to ensure that the final client receives a product or service at the right time, in the right quality, and at low cost. To achieve this, it is necessary to coordinate all the business entities within a SC. This can be achieved through supply chain management (SCM). This book addresses one of the problems included in SCM which is supply chain network design (SCND). The design of a supply chain network aims at selecting the business entities that increase the overall performance of the SC. Cost of Quality (COQ) represents a powerful measurement system that translates the implications of poor quality into a monetary language. This work includes three main contributions: (1) the model internally computes the COQ for the whole SC considering the interdependencies among business entities; (2) the model can be used at a strategic planning level to design a logistic route that achieves a maximum profit while considering the quality level within a SC; and (3) solution methods based on metaheuristics are developed and computational experiments are performed.

Supply chain management aims to add value across the supply chain and customer service is a major strategic issue. Supply chains are complex and subject to variables of forecast, supply, process, and transportation which can lead to problems such as the bull whip effect, product lateness, damaged goods and stock outs. A key issue is how to monitor and control performance across the chain and meet customer’s needs. In this work an order fulfillment model using Design for six sigma, which focuses on customer requirements from design onset and fuzzy logic, which accounts for the variable supply chain environment, is presented. By applying the model in a case study, a representation of detailed activities of order fulfillment processes is demonstrated providing key internal and external performance indicators. A theoretical transfer function for predicting the performance of the perfect order incorporating fuzzy set theory provides a way of monitoring supply chain performance. This is an effective way to monitor and control order fulfillment variables, optimise the order fulfillment process, meet customer requirements and make incremental step towards supply chain integration.

The demand for fresh vegetables including specialty Asian vegetables is increasing in the US. In addition to broad-line food retailers Asian grocery stores and restaurants cater to this demand. This study shows that the Asian grocery stores cater to a niche market that relies heavily on Asian customers. These Asian customers demand Asian specialty vegetables that are not common to broad-line grocery retailers and thus have a supply chain that is distinctive with ethnic ties. The variables such as ethnic presence, predominance of exotic Asian varieties and Asian customers, limited use of technology, fragmented businesses selling limited produce items and limited value addition make the supply chain distinctive. The study findings indicate that Michigan has potential to grow some general vegetables and limited Asian vegetables which gives Michigan producers a limited potential access to the supply chain.

Many studies report that Supply Chain excellence is still rare, in some cases, costs have risen to unprecedented levels because of adversarial relations between Supply Chain partners. The Thesis will investigate the Supply and Demand Chain in order to find out the main issues and the relative improvements. I believe that it has been with the popular concepts of “lean thinking” and “lean manufacturing” that the companies have started to pay major attention to the wastes and to their elimination; and nothing can be a bigger source of waste more than the Supply Chain. For this reasons, it has been carried out this Thesis which tackles topics of great actuality and provides all the instruments to resolve the relative issues....dedicated to my future wife Elisa.

This book is mainly divided into three parts. Firstly, it compares pork chain management between Spain and China. It is found that there are pork safety problems in China. Continuously, it analyzes the problems in Spanish-Chinese export-import pork chain. It reveals that Chinese government's license is the main obstacle for Spanish pork industries to export their products to China. Finally, it studies the governance structure choice in China's pork chain. China?s pork chain is changing in several ways. Specialized and commercial productions are gaining importance although small scale (backyard) pig production still dominates production. Similarly, small slaughterhouses continue transactions with pig producers in spot market relationships, while big pork slaughtering and processing companies are actively exploring and advancing different forms of integration. It explains the governance structure choices in China?s pork chain from both transaction cost economics and transaction value analysis perspectives using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM).

One prominent characteristic of today’s society is the huge volume of information that is being shared by a growing number of users and applications. As the result, this information must undergo a process to obtain uniformity of the terms. Subsequently, information integration has gained importance in the provision of focused and structured information for more comprehensive purposes in the educational domain in recent time. Although the Ministry of Higher Education in Iraq has a Web portal that provides information pertaining to Postgraduate studies and research, the retrieval for information supported by the Website still pose a major obstacle to students. To address this problem the researcher of this study propose an ontology-based framework for the implementation of the process of information integration in four well-known universities in Iraq. This research engages the application of Uschold and King Ontology building methodology to develop the domain ontology to support information interoperability among the selected Iraqi universities. Then, a query system is developed for assisting postgraduate students in their search for information related to postgraduate studies.

The coordination of product design and supply chain design has been inviting attention in industry and academia. The mismatch between product type and supply chain type leads to develop complexity in supply chain network, improper supplier selection, uneconomical logistics, poor customer service etc. Supply chain performance cannot be optimized without considering the compatibility of product and supply chain attributes. In fact, achieving more customer satisfaction is the unique goal of a product design and its corresponding supply chain design. But, how to integrate product design and supply chain design with customer focus?... This question is pondering in the minds of management of various firms. Therefore, a constructive methodological approach is required to integrate product design and supply chain design. The approach proposed in this book paves the way to coordinate product design and supply chain design sequentially at the conceptual design stage using customer focused quality engineering technique called Quality Function Deployment (QFD). The proposed approach helps to reflect the customer preferences and designer conception into the supply chain planning decisions.

Due to pecuniary and human resources constraints for library processes support, library managers are usually confronted with the need to justify their every action, in particular the library’s operating budget. They need to obtain a comprehensive and integrated view of the library operations and the services emanating from the same. This view is helpful for making decisions on the current operations and in identifying areas of improvement. The human intuitive judgment and decision-making can be far from optimal and it deteriorates even further with complexity and stress. Since managers in most cases work under strenous conditions, they require help, especially when faced with challenging situations that require cognitive abilities. Decision Support Systems (DSS) aid human cognitive deficiencies by integrating various sources of information, providing intelligent access to relevant knowledge, and by aiding the process of structuring decisions. Work presented demonstrates the application of DSS and Digital Library technologies implemented in a client-server environment to develop an integrated Library Decision Support System that aids the library management’s decision-making process.
