Pediatric Tumors of Oral and Maxillofacial Region

A number of retrospective studies have been done on tumors of oral and maxillofacial region. While pediatric tumors in this region are far from uncommon, few studies on these have included retrospective analysis, demographic distribution, histopathologic spectrum, and treatment and follow-up outcomes. It is not uncommon for children to present to the oral and maxillofacial specialists for evaluation of a mass in the region. It is therefore important for all of us to have a working knowledge of these pathologic processes in order to determine the clinical significance of a given lesion upon presentation. This knowledge will help us as oral and maxillofacial specialist (weather an oral pathologist or an oral physician or an oral surgeon) in further evaluation and management of the patient. This book is intended to highlight features of the more commonly encountered pediatric oral and maxillofacial tumors. It will begin with an overview of the epidemiology of various pediatric oral and maxillofacial tumors followed by some general observations on the age distribution of these lesions.

Role of Negative Pressure Dressing in Healing of Diabetic Foot Ulcers

The role of Negative Pressure Wound Dressing in healing of diabetic foot ulcers has been proposed as a novel method of manipulating the chronic wound environment in a way that it reduces bacterial burden and chronic interstitial wound fluid, increases vascularity and cytokine expression and to an extent mechanically exploiting the viscoelasticity of periwound tissues. Additionally, the cyclical application of sub-atmospheric pressure alters the cytoskeleton of the cells in the wound bed, triggering a cascade of intra-cellular signals that increases the rate of cell division and subsequent formation of granulation tissue. A combination of these mechanisms makes the NPWD therapy a versatile tool in the armamentarium of wound healing. NPWD is generally well tolerated and, with few contraindications or complications, is fast becoming a mainstay of current wound care.

David Macdonald Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. A Diagnostic Approach

To the dentist or maxillofacial practitioner, radiology is an essential diagnostic discipline and a valuable tool for treatment planning. Now more than ever, dentists are often the first to encounter lesions of the face and jaws and are frequently held liable for recognizing pathologies and other sites of concern. Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology: A Diagnostic Approach provides clinicians of varied disciplines and skill levels a practical and systematic approach to diagnosing lesions affecting the face and jaws. Firmly grounded in evidence-based research, the book presents a clear understanding of the clinical impact of each lesion within a prospective diagnosis. Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology is logically organized, beginning with the basics of radiological diagnosis before discussing each of the advanced imaging modalities in turn. Modalities discussed include helical and cone-beam computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, and ultrasonography. Later chapters cover radiological pathologies of the jaw, and also those of the head and neck immediately outside the oral and maxillofacial region. Written by a recognized expert in the field, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology contains a multitude of clinical images, practical examples, and flowcharts to facilitate differential diagnosis.

Metastatic tumours to the Oral cavity

Metastasis is an extraordinarily complex process that remains to be a major problem in the management of cancer. Metastasis, which is a process in which primary tumors disseminate to secondary organs, is a major cause of cancer mortality. Metastatic tumors to the head and neck region are generally rare and they account for less than 1% of the metastatic tumors occurring in the body. Metastasis to soft tissue of the oral cavity is much rarer than jaw bones, because of rarity, metastatic tumors in the oral region are challenging for diagnosis. Although the oral cavity is not a common site for metastatic colonization, it is an interesting site because of the various and different tissues that may be involved in the metastatic process. This textbook illustrates the biological basis of the metastatic process in general, discusses the possible mechanisms by which metastatic tumours spread to the oral region, and summarizes the information in the literature concerning oral metastatic tumours.

General anesthesia gained much popularity for treatment of very young uncooperative behavior, but the increased cost and use of such invasive methods for dental treatment was not preferred by people. Nitrous oxide sedation gained much popularity among dentists for treatment of anxious kid but was not effective for uncooperative children. This search led to the use of oral sedation in pediatric dentistry. As a coin has two sides similarly even oral sedation had their good and bad effects.

Developing an Andra-pedagogical Model for Teaching English Oral Skills

It is my interest and experience in TESOL in Libya that inspired me to undertake this study. However, it is not focused on language and linguistics, reading, writing, speaking and listening, but teaching and learning a language functionally, or communicatively, to improve students' communication skills in the Libyan HE classroom context. I have to acknowledge the fact that the current segregated model for teaching oral skills in Libya is undertaken because of a number of issues such as cultural issues affecting the teaching and learning process in Libya. Thus, my research problem would be concerned about investigating whether TESOL situation in Libya has been changed and whether the current model for TESOL oral skills plays a major impact on the HE students’ English oral skills ability. This has been achieved through observation, questionnaires, interviews, and pre- and post - tests. I intended to develop a model that will foster and facilitate not only the Libyan HE students’ oral skills but also any EFL or ESL students . This fact is true because the proposed model can be disseminated particularly in the countries where English is taught as a L2 or TESOL as is the case in Libya

Brogden Kim Human Oral Mucosa. Development, Structure and Function

Human Oral Mucosa: Development, Structure and Function is a new text that reflects the considerable increase in knowledge of oral mucosa that has occurred in recent years. Our understanding of the structure of oral mucosa is now established at a molecular rather than a tissue or cellular level. This in turn has revealed a level of function that was previously not suspected, including a sophisticated barrier to the penetration of exogenous materials, and the synthesis of specific antimicrobial compounds, representing components of the innate immune system. There is also a growing realization of commonality in structure and function between regions of oral mucosa and the mucosae of the esophagus and vagina. The aim of the present volume is to provide a more sophisticated text on human oral mucosa than presently exists in textbooks and to bring together information that is otherwise to be found in separate, specialist volumes into a comprehensive text. It relates structure at the molecular, cellular and tissue level to function and to clinical behavior. The volume is directed to advanced students and researchers in oral biology, as well as those in allied areas of investigation, such as dermatology, gynecology, internal medicine and pathology.

Pathway of Metastatic Tumors to the Oral Cavity

Metastasis is a multistep process and involves cascade of events such as detachment from the primary site, invasion, intravasation, transport and circulation, extravasation and finally bone degradation and bone formation. Metastatic tumors of the oral cavity are rare, representing about 1% of oral malignancies. In 25% of cases, oral metastasis indicates the first sign of metastatic spread and in 23% it may be the first evidence of dissemination of malignancy from its primary site. They affect the jaws much more frequently than the soft tissues. In this review, we have highlighted the various predisposing factors and propose a hypothetical pathway of metastasis for the most common malignancies involving the different areas of the body including the oral cavity.

Dental composites have proved to be a boon to restorative dentistry. Introduced more than 50 years ago, composite resin technology has given a new outlook in the field of restorative dentistry offering improved physical properties. However, composite restorative materials represents a unique class of biomaterials with severe restrictions on biocompatibility, curing behavior and esthetics ultimately resulting in shrinkage, polymerization induced shrinkage stress, improper marginal adaptation, secondary caries and limited toughness leading to failure of the restoration. Hence, the demands on these restorations with regard to mechanical properties, placement and need for in situ curing leave significant room for advancements. This book reviews the general characteristics of the dental composite restorative materials and its commercial systems available in the market so that while performing the procedure, it becomes easy and clear for the clinician to choose a particular material in a particular clinical situation.

Molecular Detection of Human Papilloma Virus in Oral Carcinoma

The role of human papilloma virus (HPV) as a potential etiological factor in oral carcinoma (OC) has been debated for the last three decades. The pathogenesis of HPV in cervical cancer is well established and the International Agency for Research on Cancer has accepted the role of HPV in several head and neck cancers. However, evidence for a definitive link between HPV and OC remains controversial. Sequence based genotyping (SBG) offers users several advantages including a generic sample preparation method, a uniform bioinformatics workflow strategy to achieve genotyping goals tailored to individual species regardless of the availability of a reference sequence, the most distinguishing feature is the ability to genotype any population structure regardless whether parental data is included, and the ability to co-dominantly score single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers segregating in populations.

Oral Health - Equity and Social Determinants

Social determinants are seen as mutable social conditions that influence life opportunities, affect access to resources, and shape patterns of behaviour that impact on oral health. Oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontal disease, tooth loss, oral mucosal lesions, oro pharyngeal cancers and oro-dental trauma are major public health problems because of their high prevalence and incidence in all regions of the world. Public health research into the social determinants of oral health inequalities has identified causal pathways linking the biological, psychosocial, behavioral, environmental and political factors to oral health and disease outcomes. However, many dental public health practitioners, policy makers and researchers have been trained in a bio-medical and behavioural paradigm, and fail to understand the philosophy underpinning the social determinants agenda. Building up suitable capacity among the dental public health workforce of personnel trained in a social determinants and population strategy framework is therefore a key priority to create a social environment that supports and maintains good oral health.

Relationship of Patient Safety Practices to Patient Outcomes

Revision with unchanged content. Secondary data were used to examine the relationships between hospital characteristics, utilization of patient safety practices, and patient outcomes in a stratified probability sample of acute care hospitals in 20 states in the US. Patient safety outcome rates for infections due to medical care, decubitus ulcers, failure to rescue, and post-operative respiratory failure were calculated using the AHRQ Patient Safety Indicator software; multivariate regression was used to determine the statistical significance of the relationships. Hospital characteristics were inconsistently related to patient outcomes. The effects of using patient safety practices, and specifically the effects on patient outcomes, appeared dependent on the outcome measured. Hospitals with poorer performance in the use of patient safety practices exhibited higher rates of infections due to medical care and decubitus ulcers than hospitals with better performance in using patient safety practices, but no differences were noted in hospital rates of postoperative respiratory failure or failure to rescue. Certain adverse events, such as infections and decubitus ulcers, may be amenable to the development of patient safety policies and preventive procedures.

Understand and assess the design, delivery, and efficacy of orally administered drugs A practical guide to understanding oral bioavailability, one of the major hurdles in drug development and delivery, Oral Bioavailability: Basic Principles, Advanced Concepts, and Applications is designed to help chemists, biologists, life science researchers, pharmaceutical scientists, pharmacologists, clinicians, and graduate and students become familiar with the fundamentals and practices of the science of oral bioavailability. The difference in rate and extent between a drug taken orally and the actual amount of a drug reaching the circulatory system, oral bioavailability is an essential parameter for determining the efficacy and adverse effects of new and developing medications, as well as finding an optimal dosing regimen. This book provides a much-needed one-stop resource to help readers better understand and appreciate the many facets and complex problems of oral bioavailability, including the basic barriers to oral bioavailability, the methods used to determine relevant parameters, and the challenges of drug delivery. In addition, this comprehensive book discusses biological and physicochemical methods for improving bioavailability, integrates physicochemistry with physiology and molecular biology, and includes several state-of-the-art technologies and approaches—Caco-2 cell culture model, MDCK, and other related cell culture models—which are used to study the science of oral bioavailability.
