Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis RAS)is a very common disease which carries no mortality but a high morbidity. Incidence of RAS varies from 5% to 50% depending on the ethnic and socioeconomic groups. The most commonly affected population is 10-40 years, who belong to either mid or high socioeconomic class with equal distribution in males and females. RAS is a multifactorial disease and there are several precipitating factors of which stress is the most important. Other associated factors are lack of sleep, minor trauma to oral mucosa in susceptible individuals, menstruation, constipation and food allergies. Although the effect of vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency was not significant; the combined effect of vitamin B12 deficiency with stress and that of iron deficiency with trauma precipitated the RAS. It is always important to rule out malabsorption syndromes and other systemic diseases in case of haematinic deficiencies.

The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is under investigation as a therapeutic target for cancers. Colon cancer cell lines are variably dependent on autocrine stimulation of EGFR. This book therefore, examines the effects of a selective EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor, Gefitinib (‘Iressa'', ZD1839), on proliferation and survival of colon cancer cell lines whose autonomous proliferation is either EGFR ligand dependent or EGFR ligand independent. Using computational approach , different structural analogues were developed for Iressa, how it inhibits the epidermal growth factor kinase ; the studies include nature of the colon cancer and how Iressa work to stop cancer and also explains the ligand binding in EGFR kinase. The consequences help to understand the nature of epidermal growth factor receptor kinase and how to inhibit intra and extra cellular signal. The In-silico properties facilitate more efficient design of screening libraries and serves as a foundation for numerous ADME compound profiling and drug ability assessments along the drug discovery value chain. It also helps to stop the cancer development; a new guideline for the design of inhibitors.

While whole grains like wheat, oats and brown rice come across as other health food options, ragi occupies its unique place.Evidences are available to advocate the effective role of millets in the management of diabetes mellitus. However, as of today, there is little public awareness on the use of millets. The availability of food products for diabetic subjects in Indian market is almost negligible. Diabetics are advised to take a balanced diet. The selection of foods is reccomended to be from all food groups with preference to low glycemic index (GI) foods. In general, foods such as legumes and millets have low GI. Finger millet is a good source of non-available carbohydrate. This property along with high levels of minerals like chromium, zinc, copper and magnesium make the finger millet suitable for consumption by diabetics.

The Periodontium is defined as a connective tissue organ, protected by epithelium, that attaches the teeth to the bone of the jaws and provides a continually adapting apparatus for their support during function. The four connective tissues of the periodontium are the lamina propria of the gingiva, the periodontal ligament, the cementum and the alveolar bone. Periodontal therapy involves two primary components; Removal of bacterial plaque and calculus, and of the anatomic defects produced. There are two primary approaches to eliminate these defects: Resective and Regenerative, both surgical. Regenerative Surgery seeks to eliminate periodontal defects by creating new bone and periodontal ligament and coronally displacing the gingival attachment and margin. The method for the prevention of epithelial migration along the cemental wall of the pocket that has gained wide attention is called Guided Tissue Regeneration. It consists of placing barrier membranes of different types to cover the bone and periodontal ligament.

Oral mucositis is a common complication of intensive cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Generally, the treatment options for this condition are largely palliative and no adequate treatment with conclusive evidence till now exists. Olive leaf extract is a natural product exerts antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities. The present project aimed to evaluate the potential effect of olive leaf extract as a local treatment for chemotherapy induced mucositis. The role of oral flora in developing oral mucositis was also assessed. Therefore, olive leaf extract was investigated thoroughly through microbiological, experimental animal studies and clinical trial. The results were compared with the action of benzydamine HCl as positive control and normal saline as negative control. This project showed that both olive leaf and benzydamine HCl were effective in reducing the incidence and decreasing the severity of oral mucositis and exert wide range of antimicrobial activity against pre isolated oral microorganisms. Accordingly we suggest using this medication for oral mucositis as a safe (herbal) and effective treatment modality.

The effect of centrally administered losartan, an angiotensin-2 receptor antagonist on gastric acid secretion and gastric cytoprotection was studied using different models of gastric ulcers such as acetic acid-induced chronic gastric ulcers, pylorus ligation, ethanol induced and stress induce acute gastric ulcer and cysteamine hydrochloride induced duodenal ulcer. Losartan was administered intracerebroventrically at two different doses of 125 micro gm/kg and 250 micro gm/kg. Both doses of losartan increased healing of ulcer in acetic acid induced chronic gastric ulcer model. In pylorus legated rats, a significant reduction in free acidity, total acidity and ulcer index was observed with high dose while low dose produced reduction in free acidity and ulcer index. Both doses also showed significant antiulcer effect in ethanol-induced and stress-induced gastric ulcers. Losartan also reduced ulcer area in cysteamine-induced duodenal ulcer. It was concluded that angiotensin II receptor antagonism in brain increases healing of gastric ulcers and also prevents development of gastric and duodenal ulcers in rats.

The significance of health education in schools has been recognized since decades. The classroom is considered the most adequate setting for presentation of dental health education programs as virtually all children attend school. The rationale behind inclusion of educational activities is that prevention is the key to controlling dental disease. Adolescents are in particular need of preventive programs as they have high levels of plaque, which leads to dental disease. When adolescents care for their teeth, they do so, in particular, to improve appearance and social attractiveness. Attempts to change dental health behavior should therefore be based on the relation of recommended actions to things that are valued by the people involved. Repetition and reinforcement are important for effective dental health education. Therefore, the authors stress on the need for continuous dental health education programs for effective prevention and control of dental disease in school children.
